>> Chapter 5: Let's Get Ridiculous
Hee hee hee.
I wonder who was doing all that bank hacking.
In unrelated news, it is now time to get a new computer.
I think I'll go straight from the worst gateway to the best.
Computer and hardware upgrades aren't instantaneous like software is - they need 24 hours to ship and install the new stuff.
24 hours later, a log out and log in gets me on to my glorious new machine.
This thing isn't actually much better than the Gateway ALPHA was!
What it has, though, is room to improve.
We'll start off with an octet of 200 Ghz processors.
Then increase the memory capacity to 128Gq.
The best modem my computer can support!
Some of the computers below this one are super-specialized, which is why there's a modem above the one I'm getting.
And both of the available security items!
With these, I'll be able to emergency detonate my computer in the case of an FBI investigation.
I just spent close to 300,000c on computer hardware.
I'll kill the time until it ships reading the news!
The Agent, known amongst the hacker community as Recoil, says in his statement that 'I have been working for ARC on a confidential project for the past two weeks. The project is immensely ambitious in nature but is nothing to worry about. ARC have been keeping the public in the dark to protect their trade secrets. Uplink Agents should not be avraid of accepting jobs from this company.'
'Some people have said that they think ARC are building some kind of military weapon - I can say that I have had full access to the ARC Central Mainframe for the past week and there is nothing of the sort on the system. What they are doing is best kept under wrapes but it is definitely not a weapon.'
Agent Recoil is a well respected hacker with years of experience, and his comments will certainly re-assure the community.
Incidentally, after that last caper, I've been promoted to Agent 3, right behind the two Agents who have been mentioned in the plot. Neat!
My hardware came!
Behold my finest creation: Veda!
128 Gigaquads of memory! 1.6 Teraherz of processing power! The ultimate hacker superweapon!
And some new toys, too!
Defrag v1.0: Tidies up all the files on my hard drive.
Monitor_Bypass v5.0: Allows me to suppress Monitors, preventing any trace until I'm already inside the system.
Decypher v3.0: We'll see this in play later.
Voice_Analyser v2.0: Likewise.
Any news while I was playing with my new toys?
He was at the top of the Agent leaderboard and made the news recently after commenting on the actions of Andromeda Research Corporation (ARC). He had been working for them on their latest product, which is currently shrowded in mystery. This latest development will no doubt add to the mystery surrounding the project.
ARC released a statement earlier today, stating 'He was the best programmer we had ever seen and was a lead player in the project. For something like this to happen is a tragedy of the greatest order. Our thoughts go out to this man's family and friends.
Anyway, let's finish off my mission queue to test drive Veda.
There! Now I don't need to worry about a trace, and can hack the account at my leisure.
Time taken to break password: 2 seconds.
And that was with it using 1/4th of my CPU power.
Even once I'm in, no trace. The monitor bypass has worked flawlessly.
These missions are, frankly, embarassingly easy now.
I can't even SEE Log_Deleter run now.
The last mission on the list is a new type!
My goal is to destroy all records on a sales system.
Security is high! In addition to a monitor and proxy, they also have a FIREWALL, which prevents file read/writes and access to the console.
Fortunately, I already have bypassers for all of these.
In we go!
Corporate systems will always begin a trace when Admin signs in. Note my interface updates!
Trace_Tracker has been upgraded to version 4, meaning that it shows the estimated time until the trace finishes in seconds. I'm not sure what the second number means.
Also, my map now shows the trace in realtime - the identified parts of the trace are in red.
Now, I COULD go in here and delete the files one by one with File_Deleter...
SCREW THAT
TO THE CONSOLE
Consoles in Uplink use sort of a faux-Unix interface, that I'm pretty sure is documented in-game somewhere. I just know a few important commands.
Data annihilated!
Now to wait for it to show up on the news.
Hope you weren't holding any Future Computers stock, kiddies.
Next time: All kinds of new missions!
