>> Act 2: Raise of the Conductor's Baton
Part 5: Ascend
Link back to comic: Page 664
You have been issued a challenge by Bro.
There is only one way to respond.
[S] Dave: Ascend.
You are now the Wayward Vagabond.
Let's start by picking up that p--
What pumpkin?
You are surrounded by cans full of delicious food, and are very hungry.
Sadly, your weak digits and herbivore teeth are useless for penetrating the steel treasure cans.
Your human etiquette book is in good shape!
You've eaten about half of it by now.
With nothing better to do, you immediately make a little town out of the cans.
You are now the Mayor of Can Town.
West of Can Town are some things.
That one looked pretty delicious. It wasn't, though.
Uranium tends not to be.
Having much better luck with this delicious chalk.
The firefly inside this amber seems to still be alive. However, you can't free it without killing it.
You are starting to get carried away with this whole Can Town nonsense.
Adding to the collage, you use the chalk to draw up a sky backdrop.
Four planets orbit in the distance.
Behind the furthest shadows and cables, a dark planet looms, with a single moon.
Oh hey, John's up to something. You have basically no idea how to use that terminal.
Scrolling up through past commands, you find these interesting inputs at the top of the list.
Using SWITCH #, you can check the other screens. One shows a wizard-adorned house, and one a boy in confusing circumstances.
You don't even want to bother with the 4th screen, this is so confusing.
Entering HOME appears to have left the terminal frozen. Stuck, even.
Now you just have this countdown. But hey, that's still over four hours away!
You waste four hours doing mayoral duties.
Minutes in the future, but not many...
A PEREGRINE MENDICANT trundles precious cargo beneath the gleam of the celestially ominous.
Okay, time to get out of here before that timer reaches zero.
The way out is barred shut!
But from here, you can reach two other areas, in theory.
The third area is locked, and you just came from the first.
Time for the second, then!
You have no idea what this does.
This appears to be an Appearifier.
You can set coordinates, both in space and in time! Whatever is at those coordinates gets appearified over to the pad.
With some fiddling, you start appearifying the stuff you left in the other room into this one.
You appearify your firefly friend out of his amber cage!
You will name him later.
Attempting to appearify the pumpkin you ate earlier back before you ate it doesn't work - that would cause a time paradox, because you wouldn't have been able to eat the pumpkin.
Instead you get a ghost pumpkin, which immediately disintegrates into slime.
Inspiration! You use the Appearifier to appearify the grating over the exit.
Incidentally, you only have 30 seconds left on that timer.
[S] WV: Hasten to the exit post-haste! NEXT CHAPTER:
...Nah, just kidding. There's more!
[S] WV: Ascend. ANIMATION LOG:
A Wayward Vagabond emerges from his capsule, once again surrounded by empty desert.
A crater from a meteor impact surrounds him, and a broken hand lies where once was a wizard statue.
Before he can get off, the countdown reaches zero, and the capsule takes flight.
WV is taken on a great voyage, traveling thousands of miles to the west.
On his journey, he passes by a tree, where another capsule lies.
This is in another crater - this one from the meteor that destroyed John's neighborhood.
Years in the past, but not many...
Untold millions of years ago, a portal opens, and a meteor emerges.
From this meteor's impact site, a temple rises, eons before humanity will exist.
Years in the past, but not many...
Rose's power supply is lost.
However, she knows of another place where she might find better fortune...
John's father is held captive on a dark planet with a single moon.
However, he won't go down without a struggle...
Dave finally comes face to face with Bro.
Nobody's leaving this rooftop without a furious duel...
Back in the future. The Wayward Vagabond's capsule has run out of fuel.
And so he lands, at the site of a temple that has stood for millions of years...
Where is he? Who is he? What purpose brought him here?
And what is his relation to the struggles of four young humans from centuries past?
