Welcome to floor 3!
Immediately visible here is a bomb shop. I'm actually doing pretty good on money, and pretty bad on bombs, so I'm gonna swing by and buy a bag. However, as one goes deeper into the dungeon, prices increase, so I end up forking over $2,750 for them instead of $2,500.
Going left is tricky with that arrow trap, but I use a tricky tactic - I throw my pistol over the edge ahead of me to trigger it before I head over myself.
What a boring floor!
Floor 4 starts with something of much importance! That key. The presence of the key means that somewhere else on this floor is a locked chest - bringing the two together can unlock for me a very valuable item. The key's in a bit of an inconvenient spot, though - my only ways to reach it are to bomb through the ceiling or rope up from below. I have more bombs than ropes, so I'll use one of them.
Now for something I'll be doing an awful lot in this game: Juggling multiple items. I can only hold one thing at a time, but I also don't want to give up the pistol or the key. Thus, my general strategy is to move through an area, clearing enemies with the pistol, then put it down, run back, and carry/throw the key on ahead.
Fortunately, this proves to not be necessary! There's my chest. I'll part with another of my precious bombs to blast through and get it.
There are actually a number of noteworthy things in this screenshot!
+ITEM! I just picked up an equipped item, not a held item, so it vanishes as soon as I get it. Instead of being in my hands, it appears in the HUD, right under my health. The item, as the text says, is the Udjat Eye, which does two things. First, it lets me see gems buried in walls, which can be blasted out with bombs or dug out with a pickaxe for money. The second use will come into play somewhere between floor 5 and floor 7.
Also, at the very bottom right of the screen, there's a lantern. Lanterns on lit floors always mean shop!
DAME ALERT
Oh, geez, now I have to juggle the dame and the pistol. I'd better check that shop first, just in case it's something else I have to carry.
You know how I said that sometimes bones rise up as skeletons?
You see how I only have 2 health left now?
Yeah.
The shop is just another bomb shop, so I'm set for that. I'm gonna have to drop my pistol down before continuing, though, to set off the arrow trap for me.
I mean, I could set off the arrow trap by throwing down the dame, too, but I'm not that desperate.
Yet.
Dames are fairly hopeless on their own. They just stand around until you pick them up to carry them away, and once you do, if you drop them they start running around at random. The goal with a dame is to bring them to the exit for that floor, without killing them in the process.
Fortunately, dames are surprisingly sturdy - they have about 3-5 health, take 1 damage from all attacks (aside from instakills), and never take damage from falling a long distance.
Fortunately, dames can walk through the exit on their own, meaning I don't need to sacrifice my item slot for 'em. Unfortunately, I seem to have trapped myself away from my pistol!
Naw.
This is why we save dames - for our trouble, we are rewarded with a kiss, which recovers one health! This is just about the only source of healing available in the game.
Also, note the change in terrain color across the screen. This means that we have completed the first of the game's four zones, and are about to embark into a new area, filled with new challenges and new rewards! Stay tuned!
