>> Chapter 2: Pimp My Ride
Part 2: Magical Mystery Tour
October 7, 2155
My journey to get a QuasiSpace Portal spawner took over three months! I'd better make this next bit fast. Time for efficiency.
From here on, I'll be using QuasiSpace judiciously to go all over the damn place. Current priority: Finding Rainbow Worlds.
I find my first in the Northeast corner of the galaxy, orbiting Groombridge. These are also nice for the big deposits of Radioactives on the surface... then again, look at the temperature.
53 deaths and 9 planetary landings each costing 1.3 fuel later, I debate whether or not that was really worth it. I suspect it was.
Next, I hit Gamma Aquarii for a second, much safer rainbow world. At this point, my fuel supply is already dwindling, so it's time to go back to my end of the galaxy and put these worlds to good use.
But first, a Situation seems to be underway.
News from Hayes:
- We have a major situation, Captain! As of a few days ago, all Spathi starship captains have vanished from our starbase. We don't know how or why, but until we recieve replacements from Spathiwa, you will be unable to commission any additional Spathi Eluder vessels for your fleet.
- In the log of your voyage from Unzervalt, I read that you encountered a tumbling, red probe that attacked the Tobermoon, killing Captain Burton. Over the past few months we have monitored an increasing number of these probes entering the system, and I'm afraid their population seems to be growing geometrically. If this continues, in a year space will be crawling with these things! I recommend you treat this as a serious problem now, before it becomes a disaster. Discover who is producing these probes and stop them from creating any more.
They seem to have vanished from the starmap, too. Fortunately, no plot will get in the way of my current priorities!
Selling my alien data and rainbow world locations, I gain a whopping 1670 credits. Since each technology I can purchase from the Melnorme costs 150 credits, this is plenty.
After this torrent of purchases, I have all of the following upgrades:
- My Ion-Bolt Guns can be replaced with more powerful Fusion Blasters.
- My lander moves at double speed.
- I can add point-defense laser systems to my flagship.
- My lander is resistant to damage from alien lifeforms.
- My lander can carry twice as much cargo.
- I can build fuel tanks that hold twice as much fuel.
- My lander's gun fires at double speed.
- My lander is reistant to damage from earthquakes.
- I can add modules that make my weapons home in towards enemies.
- My lander is now resistant to electrical storms.
- My lander is now resistant to planetary hot-spots.
Damn! There's still two more tech upgrades I didn't quite reach. Nevertheless, this will make further exploration much easier.
Next stop: Delta Aurigae.
This system is a treasure trove of resources and lifeforms, being one of only two systems in the galaxy (to my knowledge) to boast more than one gem world. Six of its planets have native life on them. This trip fills up two and a half of my cargo tanks, in addition to giving me a good amount of data, hopefull enough to get the final two technologies. A trip to another ruby world in the area and I'm ready to once again return home... but not before giving the Melnorme another visit. This time:
- My Ion-Bolt Guns and Fusion Blasters can be replaced with Hellbore Cannons, the most powerful of weapons.
- I can also build Shiva Furnaces, which regenerate energy on my ship even faster than Dynamo Units.
And with that, I have all the technology. All further credits can be turned to the noble cause of buying fuel. To Earth!
News from Hayes:
- We have detected a minute but measurable disturbance in the InterSpace fabric, at approximate TrueSpace coordinates 100:50. Our scientists speculate that this disturbance may be caused by many thousands of HyperWarp penetrations all in phase -- as though a huge fleet of ships were on the move.
Our stash results in about 16,000 RUs. Time to pimp my ride.
Now we're talking. My fuel max has increased by another 100 units, my crew complement by another 50, my Ion-Bolt guns are upgraded to Fusion Blasters, and I have a point defense laser system. This ship is about halfway complete, meaning I think it's time to go ahead and move into chapter 3, finishing the ride-pimping as I go.
NEXT TIME: Oh, get the hell back there.
