Unit upgrade of the day: Marisa's weapons!

Upgrading weaponry is very expensive, so I don't do it often.

And new skills, since it's been a while there!

Reimu, Marisa and Youmu all spring for Predict, a skill that raises accuracy and evasion when your Power is 130 or higher.

ONWARDS

Our heroes have arrived in some sort of library!

It's all books, as far as the eye can see. Most extraordinary.

Marisa and Cirno raise a ruckus, Keine tells them to be quiet, because this is a library.

Nitori geeks out, Rumia is bored and wants to keep moving, Marisa makes a mental note to come back to this place later.

Keine and Youmu are quick to point out that we are still in the middle of resolving an incident there is a time for these antics but this is not it.

Cirno cannot read these books! Daiyousei admonishes that she shouldn't read the books without permission, but Cirno says it's okay 'cause they entered the library without permission anyway.

Reimu makes fun of Cirno for being unable to read, only to find that she can't read it either, because it's not in Japanese.

This, as Marisa explains, is because they are all magic tomes! You have to be a magician to read 'em.

Of course, it turns out that she can't read these books either.

But wait! We are not alone in the library!

Chapter 9: Trap in the Great Library

Patchouli identifies the invaders as a particularly ragtag bunch! Reimu experimentally accuses her of being the culprite of this incident, which she quietly denies, being only one of the people who lives here.

Marisa says that, that being the case, she should step aside, since they're kind of in a hurry here. Unable to do so for obvious reasons, Patcholi calls in two assistants!

Koakuma
Species: Demon
Ability: ???
Disposition: Helpful

Kurumi
Species: Vampire
Ability: ???
Disposition: Snazzy

Cirno is upset to see that the ugly eyeball monsters are here, too!

Reimu, meanwhile, is trying to remember that second one's name, since they've met before in the past. Some kind of food-ish name1... Senbei2? Arare3? No...

Kurumi is heartbroken at being forgotten after fighting so valiantly in their previous encounter! Koakuma urges her to get it together.

Patchouli reminds the two that they don't have time for trifling talk! Are the preparations ready?

Ready! All systems, green! EASIS system, activate!

FUN FACT: An incomprehensible blend of English and Japanese, EASIS stands for "Elemental Activation SOKOMADEYO! (That's as far as you go!) Interception System".

The green gems on the field are emitting danmaku now! Reimu isn't too worried.

The fight starts now! Let's get some scanning going on.

Kurumi is laughable, being even weaker than Elly. Next!

Koakuma is pretty weak, too! Just a pair of midbosses to beat down.

Patchouli... well, she seems about the same on the surface, but let's not forget that she's carrying a spell card.

A fair number of magic books floating around this library! The tenative plan is to send a couple characters east while everyone else goes north to fight Kurumi, then regroup around Koakuma and Patchouli.

CHAAARGE

The Grimoires are about on the same level as the fairy maids, although they have better range on their attacks.

At the beginning of the enemy turn, the crystals laying down fire changed! These are damn powerful fields, too - -30% evasion and defense.

This is a pretty dangerous place, since there are still three colors left, and we have no way of knowing which will turn on next.

Alice seems lost in thought...

When we're fighting less dangerous enemies, Daiyousei can help! During more dangerous fights, she gets regulated to healing duty.

Next is yellow!

Only Alice is caught unprepared.

Useful trick: The crystals aren't enemies, and don't create danmaku on their own space. Accordingly, standing right on top of one is guaranteed safe!

Weak point discovered!

Grimoires have no attacks that can function at point blank range.

So yeah, these stupid goddamn crystals are the EASIS system. Kurumi and Koakuma set it up, apparently!

Something Kurumi says inspires a thinking chain reaction in Alice. She's figured out the secret!

All the crystals are controlled by a single giant rotating magic circle. This means that they'll always cycle through in the same pattern!

The secret figured out, and only one color left, this battle won't be hard at all. Danmaku, Alice reflects, is all about brains.

Okay, next is going to be black. Everyone move accordingly!

Keine can handle any lasers these books can dish out!

Alice is still on top of the situation!

Next up is green.

[ BGM - Scarlet Phoneme, Float Above the Lake ~ Scarlet Symphony ]

Kurumi makes her fighting debut! She and Marisa trade lasers without either scoring a hit.

Time to finish wiping out the mooks, then get to work!

Nitori scores first blood with her missiles! Kurumi is dodgier than any boss we've fought yet, but still not too hard to hit.

Vampire claw!

By the way, Kurumi is regenerating HP, so we'd better take her down here and now.

She's holding on to survival pretty intensely!

And then Reimu takes her down.

Despite Patchouli's objections, Kurumi doesn't want to get beat up anymore. Retreat is victory!

Since Kurumi and Koakuma were working together to activate the EASIS system, it now deactivates! One less thing to deal with.

Since we beat all the enemies out here, and the inner enemies are staying put, we can take a few turns to regroup now.

Next: We move in.

To be continued!

1 "Kurumi" is Japanese for "Walnut".
2 Senbei = rice cracker.
3 Arare = roast rice cakes.
