I read this book when it first came out and it's sequel 'Ink'. Both are so good and hard to describe. It's not really a'good guy vs bad guy' kind of book. The characters, plot, and world-building were really good. I'm going to read them over again. If you get the chance read 'Ink' I think you'll enjoy it.

I can't wait to read 'Ink'! Unfortunately, I'm prolly going to have to wait til the fall, when I'll be in St. Paul instead of Smallville, Kansas. Hmm ... unless it's downloadable on my nook ... *eyes it*
OHMIGOD IT IS. Sorry, too awesome for words, I gotta go buy it now.

It's been a while since I read that. It's kinda nice to know that I am not the only one who made it through. I do remember, that in the end I was kinda confused who was supposed to be who.
But it was an interesting read. Just that somewhere in the middle I thought that it could be a lot shorter.

Than again, I read that book in German. The translator complained in the back, that some things had to be translated rather freely, much to his dismay. So maybe I did miss out on important things. I sure liked the imagination of this (a desert of trash over an endless pit or the skins in the end) but I don't remember finding this book overly well written...

Yeah, I can't really imagine "Vellum" being translated very successfully. I got the same thing with the Harry Potter series - most of the books I own in that one are in German, and all the delightful Britishisms didn't really come across.
... We totally could have just had that conversation in German, couldn't we.
