The Takatori family was a powerful, influential, and rich family in Japan. Takatori Reiji was quickly becoming an important politician, and his younger brother Shuichi was moving up the ranks in the police force. Both were set to make sure their family became one of, if not the most powerful family in Japan, when the unthinkable happened. Kikuno, Reiji’s wife, had already borne him two sons; Hirofumi and Masafumi. But, though she was a caring wife and mother, she did not love Reiji. No, her heart belonged to another, and, hidden from the man they both were related to, she and Shuichi made love. Karma, however, decided to play a game on them, and Kikuno found herself pregnant. She gave birth to a baby boy, whom she named Mamoru. Mamoru was presented as Reiji’s son, although it didn’t take long for his “father” to learn the truth. Determined to spite his brother, Reiji never told Kikuno that he had learned the truth, and Shuichi never learned that Mamoru was his son. Mamoru grew up with his brothers, much younger, but still happy. His father never seemed to have time to spend with him, but his mother loved him deeply, and his brothers played with him when they had time.

When Mamoru was 10, however…

Mamoru had been kidnapped, bound, and gagged by a group of men. These men were part of an international crime syndicate, who abducted young children from multiple countries, bringing them to safehouses in the United States. To keep him quiet, he was drugged, and brought from his home in Japan to the United States.

Because the case was international in nature, the FBI was involved, and the Behavioral Analysis Unit was invaluable in rescuing the boy. Unfortunately, a bad reaction to the drugs he had been given, the boy had no memories of who he was. The BAU team rightly believed him to be Takatori Mamoru, however, Takatori Reiji denied that the child was his. Tests to determine identity were attempted, but due to the influence of the Takatori family, accurate records relating to Takatori Mamoru could never be found. With his family unwilling to take him, and no way to prove his identity, he was given over to Social Services as an orphan.

The boy, being young and bright, was adopted by the Tsukiyono family, who gave him the name "Omi". Omi enjoyed growing up with the Tsukiyonos, making lots of friends in school, and becoming quite fluent in English, alongside the Japanese he already knew and that the Tsukiyonos encouraged him to keep up. One thing that always stuck with him, though, was that his rescuers were FBI agents, and that they'd used profiling to find him.

A brilliant student, gifted with computers, Omi took online correspondance courses in high school so that he could get a head start on his college work. After high school graduation, he finished not one, but two Bachelor Degrees, one a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, and the other a Bachelor of Science in Criminology. He applied for, and was accepted, at the FBI, and was able to make it into the Behavioral Analysis Unit.

Within the BAU, Omi works primarily behind the scenes, studying and analysing any data they come across, although he often classes with the Technical Analyst, who claims he's ursurping her position. He is certified for and does carry a firearm, however, he dislikes having to use it. Whenever he can, he carries throwing darts with a tranquilizer serum, which he uses to incapacitate, rather than kill.
