Film rec

I watched ‘Promising Young Woman’ on DVD the other night, and it was even better than I expected, given all the award-bothering.The script!!! It’s described as a female revenge thriller (it’s also a black comedy and a psychological study), and while that female perspective resonated with me, it’s also very specific to a certain generation, the one before the current crop of students who are supposed to be more cognisant of consent, although since the film came out, there was a wave of anxiety about spikig women’s drinks in the UK…

Mulligan is great, her chemistry with Bo Burnham’s Ryan is great, (he directed Eighth Grade! Would be really interested in reading interviews with him and Fennell about how they juggle their various gigs, polymaths both.) And the people involved in the making of the film are allowed to be self-congratulatory about the casting, not just of the self=described ‘nice guys’.

One thing that was unexpectedly brilliant was the soundtrack (I’m even accepting of the appearance of a Spice Girls song, as the protagonists and creator are around the age where I exempt women for liking them. They didn’t know any better.

I know it’s an obvious line because of the background of some of the people involved on and off screen, but if you enjoyed Killing Eve and Veronica Mars you’ll enjoy this.
