Whoo hoo!

Just received notification that I have been admitted into UT's Middle Eastern Studies MA program for the Fall of 2009. Very excited! I have missed academia terribly, and being admitted to UT means that I get to stay in Austin as well, which I very much wanted to do. Huzzah!

Congratulations, you smart-pants!

(You sure you don't want to transfer to UT El Paso? Eh?)

Yeah, I have VERY conflicted feelings about being in academia again. I've missed school sooooo much, and it will be great to be a in program that is actually about what I want to do with my actual life, rather than my English degree that I got just because I could, basically. ha ha On the other hand, when I got my BA, I remember being so relieved that I was going to be out in the real world "fighting the good fight" again instead of being in the ivory tower.

I guess the trick will be to be in academia WITHOUT retreating to the ivory tower. I think that this program will really allow me to do it, especially as it will coincide so nicely with my activism on behalf of Palestine. We'll see!

Congratulations from the Crowes. Rebekah talks openly about how she was ready to take a break but that the longing to get back in was by far the best decision she's made. Her break from school is what reminded her this is what she wants to do with her life. Plus, I think she'd agree with you on the avoiding the ivory tower idea.
