All of the asides are giving me thedaysetup feels all over again!

The movie and its topic... that is so weird, it feels surreal. The ultimate honor or the ultimate disrespect, if it becomes a mayhem-filled sideshow?

It's hard to be an innovator in the arts fields. Most people just think you're "doing it wrong". If you're lucky, like Beethoven, the world comes with you and you watch your innovation take hold and become the next big thing. If you're unlucky, you have Van Gogh's experience of never being appreciated in his own lifetime.

As for the music of the now... we've devolved into rap/hip-hop (those seem basically the same to me) and pop, and neither of those is innovative. Current music is offensive now because it's simplistic and asinine instead of because it's breaking barriers. Who saw that coming?

Oh man, you should see the movie if you get a chance. The odd thing is, stealing the body turns out to be a total mark of respect.

I'm into a lot of today's music (there's some excellent outside-the-mainstream music out there). Somewhere, there's a girl with a computer or guitar or something who is creating a sound that is going to be huge in 40 years that just sounds like noise to us. The world is strange place. :D

Thank you so much for reading!

When I think about innovation in the arts I end up wondering a bit if anybody is ever really a game-changer, or if they just make art influenced by all the art that's come before and the emerging trends within that art - by that I mean elements of The Next Big Thing show up like blips and then eventually gather up enough statistical noise that they snowball into Famous Person Q.

I don't consider myself particularly creative or original - maybe the vast majority of people aren't and there really are iconoclasts with the titantic ability to create something new. I'd rather think about it this way, myself...

You know, I think there's a genuine sense of innovators not really knowing what they're doing - like they're just trying to make music they like. And then somebody hears it and is like "THAT'S THE SOUND!" and they just run with it. But, you know, its giants standing on the shoulders of other giants. I propose that its almost impossible to create a genuinely new sound. I mean, we have rhythm, we have melody and at some point in our history, we've probably tried all of them, so the new direction to innovate maybe has to do with what instrument we play or what is surprisingly fun to dance to. Heh.

Also, I like Emmylou Harris but don't listen to her much on account of she's fucking depressing, so I like your entry for giving me an excuse to give something of hers a listen tonight.

The last time I competed I was all like "story story story" so I figured I'd go for something different this time.
