LJ Idol Week #16 - Topic "Why Is That Turkey Dancing?"

Mar 31, 2016 13:19

This is my entry for Week #16 of therealljidolIt has taken me decades, but I've finally reached the point where I can just let myself go and dance like a fool. My style may look like an artless melange of tai chi and myoclonic seizures, but I don't care. When the music starts, get out of the way because I'm going to need a whole lot of space ( Read more... )

My mother has this huge hate for all forms of popular music, so we did not listen to the radio in the car. Instead, it was 8-track tapes, with either Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals or things like Sibelius (it took me almost 20 years to reunite with what turned out to be Pohjola's Daughter). At home... classical music on the stereo, often opera (though the sound system was good). I have no love for opera...

But the transistor radio my brother hacked together from god-knows-what (maybe it was a school shop project?) secretly lived in my room during the earlly 70s. So, I got some music from older sibs and their radio habits (this is why my tastes run toward late 60s/earlly 70s and not the 80s, like the rest of my generation).

By the time I was allowed to buy some records... Elton John's greatest hits were among them. Crocodile Rock wasn't my favorite, but that song wants you to move! And you will.

I think you should have linked your 5-year-old rendition of the song to this post! For... reasons. :)

Isn't it funny how so many of us hate our parents' music? My dad was a huge country fan and for years I could barely stand it. I've come around to appreciating a lot more of it over the years, but just the fact that it was on all the time when I was growing up made me cringe whenever I heard a steel guitar for years!

I would love to hear my youthful version of the song someday. I suspect my father has a box of reel to reel tapes somewhere just waiting to be converted to MP3s.

I generally liked the classical music (I was a music major in college) with the exception of opera. My mother hated even the popular music of her own era, though-- jazz in any genre. She just also hated all future popular music, too. ;)

My Dad had much more open music tastes, and liked a LOT of the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel, and various songs from the 60s and 70s. He also liked Country to some degree (I still can't stand it).

For our kids, our daughter liked pop music a lot (the horror!), but has settled into early Alternative. Our son likes rap (augh), and most rock and roll. His favorite group is Led Zeppelin. So, not really a rebellion there, either!

"I sometimes wonder if my scoliosis is actually a problem I created for myself by avoiding public crotch contact." LOL I just snorted hot chocolate on that one :) I have reached the age where my dancing is no longer cool, and I married a man who comes from a completely different dance tradition, but sometimes I still wanna!

I love watching people from different dance traditions boogie down together! That's how new art is made!

I loved my Pop's reel to reel and 8-track player! Music was always heard in my house, and I think it's one of the greatest comforts/expressions of our spirits. Dance is music's natural partner in expressionism.

Love the photo and the trip down memory lane! Peace~~~D

Yeah, those reel to reel players were awesome. Editing was, in some ways, more of a breeze on those than it is now. In other ways, it was a pain in the butt. :D

Dancing and music definitely go together, as my son is always reminding me.

Fortunately, my Mom's records all remained in tact. I rescued them and put them into storage containers for my Dad. He was thrilled, telling me that, actually, he'd bought most of those record. Don't ask me why he'd never reclaimed them in the 20-some years since their divorce. I think he didn't want to be rude or something.

There is a long tradition of people not asking for their records back after a divorce or break-up. Sometimes its hard to recall whose are whose and sometimes its just too touchy an area!
