How I Became a HumanThe absolute worst incident of bullying I dealt with was during my freshman year of high school. Four of the guys who used to pick on me sat behind me on the bus. One of them took a half-cut geode and started smacking it again and again into the back of my head. I thought "At least its ( Read more... )

I never knew what to think about Prince, except he seemed to do everything the way babies sneeze or kittens play - full out, whole body, giving zero fucks what anybody thought about it.

Plus, he was hella talented and I liked his music.

I think part of me was never sure if it was ok to like him, because of the zero fucks thing was the opposite of me.

I like that you were able to embrace it (instead of becoming a closet Prince fan, like me.)

I wish I had the fashion sense to dress like him. I have sort of an idea of looks that I like on stage, but I feel like clothes just don't look good on me in general. He had such a sense of style. Sigh.

One of the great things about Prince is that he appeared to give zero fucks, but he worked his ass off because, at some level, he gave a fuck. Looking like you don't give a fuck while giving a fuck is some serious work. :D

True, that.

You need a shopping buddy. Pick a friend who's good at fashion, and take him/her shopping with you. Buy them lunch. People who like fashion enjoy shopping, so it's not like you'd be asking a huge favor.

You, sir, were one hella suave baby.

I'm glad Prince helped you reclaim who you were. Thanks for sharing this with us. It's been a hard year. One of my friends said on twitter the other day that if Death has claimed Bowie and Prince in the same year, they must be needed to fight off some musical apocalypse. Those are the big guns, for sure, and they will be missed.

Its been a brutal year for people I admire. I could have written pages and pages about Gary Shandling, for example. The universe is cruel in its randomness.

That is one hell of a baby picture.
You did a far better job encapsulating Prince than I ever could have done. :) I enjoyed reading your thoughts on him, and how he was interwoven with your life. Thanks!

I should let my mom dress me still - I could look like that to this day.

The only positive thing about the losses of the past year are that most of these artists had tremendous catalogs of work. Not counting his unreleased music, I could explore the music he released for decades and not get tired of it. There's just so much.

It's an amazing, and sobering, day when we realize that we are working with a finite personality, body, life and that we had better use those ingredients to mix up the "I" we really want to be. I'm sorry to hear you were ever bullied, but so jazzed to read about your self-transformation through acceptance, yet still holding on to that lifespark desire to make more of oneself!

And RIP Prince. Even us punk rockers held him up as a god.

3.30 *faints*

Oh, I remember my husband seeing that clip and it was a shock to both of us-- Prince's music never really appealed, so we missed out on how outrageously good he was with a guitar. Wow.

Dude, the moment where he hurls the guitar up in the air. Logic tells me it must have come down eventually, but my heart tells me Prince was just returning it to God since it was His guitar. I've shared this video a dozen times since it came out and it never gets old. The smile on Dahnio Harrison's face just gets me every time.

I like how you restructured the ending to close the loop a bit more! Really neat to see your evolution.

Thank you so much for the input. I wish I'd had more time to rewrite. After your feedback, I had an idea of doing a complete make-over but there just wasn't time. Lesson learned - if I want feedback, get it done sooner.

Thank you so much for reading, commenting and offering feedback!
