SETTING & MAP

SETTING

An unidentified island somewhere on Earth. The island itself seems to have been home to a small population; much of the town is focused on the north end of the island. It seems to have long ago been abandoned, though- the buildings are all collecting dust, and all of them are eerily empty and devoid of life; not a single can of food, vehicle, or photograph remains of the people who used to live here.

Resources are scarce due to the island being used as the game arena; the buildings largely serve only as shelter. However, there may be certain things available in some locations, and that will be further elaborated upon below.

ENVIRONMENT

Mountainous with a boreal forest climate. The island is rich in plant life and trees; the majority of the island is forested. There are many rocky hills along with a small mountain at the center of the island.

The current weather and state of the flora/fauna seem to indicate that it is currently autumn on the island. The weather is mildly chilly, with an average of 64°F (18°C) during the day and dipping down to 39°F (4°C) at night. The island is not very windy, fortunately for you, but when it rains, you'd better find some shelter or you'll be chilled to your bones.

The water is freezing, so you might not want to swim in it unless absolutely necessary. If you're monitored trying to swim away from the island, the game runners will trigger your collar to explode, so be careful how far you drift. The beaches themselves are rocky and dirty.

The only wildlife to be found on the island are common birds and rabbits. If you are very lucky, you might spot a wildcat. The forest makes for excellent cover, and it's rich with edible plants if you know where to look. However, there are also some pretty poisonous plants in there, so don't go shovelling everything you see into your mouth.

Players will be informed of any relevant weather changes every six hours in the program director's reports.

MAP

Descriptions are a work in progress; pictures coming soon.

1 - Helipad (IMAGE) Looks like it's been out of commission for years. It's a wide, unassuming concrete expanse. There's a small radio tower next to it, but there's not much to be found here. It is the area from which you can best access the hiking trail, though.

2 - Library (IMAGE) This dusty old library is boarded up, but if you can make your way inside, it'll provide some decent shelter. Many of the books have been cleared out, but the children's section is largely intact. It may be worth noting that you will not be able to locate any book published after the Earth year 2009, if you happened to be paying attention to that kind of thing. There are enough history books, magazines, and dictionaries here that you would be able to safely draw the conclusion that the island is somewhere on planet Earth. The library has two floors; the bottom floor has most of the books, the reception, and children's section; the top floor has a reading lounge and a decent view of the mountain to the west.

3 - Lake (IMAGE) There's a small lake in the middle of a forest clearing here. The water is stagnant and a very dark green, but there are raspberry bushes on the edge of the lake- you won't be able to find them anywhere else on the island. There's a small dock and an abandoned wooden fishing boat tethered to it. The boat looks very, very old and like the bottom is about to rot right through.

4 - Port (IMAGE) This port is small and modest; no big ships have ever passed through here. The wide dock is still pretty stable, but of course, there are no boats anchored here.

5 - Residential housing (IMAGE) Dozens and dozens of small houses; this appears to be where the majority of people lived when the island was still inhabited. The streets are completely empty and the houses themselves are in various states of disrepair; some have missing roof tiles, some have broken or missing windows or doors, but at the same time a few of them seem to be just fine.

6 - Police station (IMAGE) The police station is locked up tightly, so it'll take some work to break in. Of course, you won't find any weapons here. There are a lot of offices here and a few containment cells. Loose wires are hanging from the ceiling in a lot of the rooms.

7 - Mountain peak/lookout point (IMAGE) One of the highest points on the entire island. If you manage to make your way up there, you'll find a lookout point. There's a rusted old pair of binoculars mounted in the ground. The lenses are scratched and dirty, but you can still get a 360° view of your surroundings.

8 - Courthouse (IMAGE) The courthouse doesn't have much to offer; it's the typical setup. Most of the inside is messy, like the offices have been ransacked. One important thing to note is that there is still running water in the courthouse. Whether or not it's actually drinkable is iffy.

9 - Hospital (IMAGE) This five-storey hospital is one of the largest buildings on the island. Its halls are as clean as they are eerily silent; it has been emptied of all medicines, supplies, records, and the like in a very systematic matter, compared to other ransacked buildings. The bottom floor is the administration level, the first, second, and third floors are general care, the fourth floor is the children's ward, and the fifth floor has an empty cafeteria and lounge.

10 - East Lighthouse (IMAGE) This lighthouse is a great deal smaller than the South Lighthouse. There's not much to find here, but, interestingly, the East Lighthouse still has running electricity. Making your way inside and turning the light on might be good for warmth at night... But it'd also literally alert everyone else on the island to your presence. Maybe there's another way to use the electricity?

11 - Restaurant (IMAGE) There is no food to be found at this small family-style restaurant. Most of its windows are smashed in, so it's not an ideal place to linger, but you might be able to find some use in some of the things left behind here, such as spoons, tablecloths, some napkins, various small cookware, and dish soap. In the arena, scavenging for all that you can is never a bad idea.

12 - Caves (IMAGE) Meant for tourists, the caves contain a convenient entrance marked by steps. They're not all that extensive; your exploration will only take you as far as a few adjoining caves. There's nothing to be found in them but rocks.

13 - Supermarket (IMAGE) This large supermarket seems to be the only one of its kind on the island. There's no food to be found here, either, but anything non-edible has left behind, like shopping carts, the cash registers, clothes, greeting cards, toilet paper, a lot of long-dead flowers and potted plants, et cetera. There's a large cargo truck still parked behind the store; it is one of the few vehicles left on the island. However, the tank is devoid of gas and the keys are nowhere to be found.

14 - Shopping mall (IMAGE) This mall has been wiped clean; most of its tenants were evicted a long time ago. The mall has two floors and offers typical mall fare, like clothing stores and a food court.

15 - Elementary school (IMAGE) This abandoned school had a colorful, cheerful mural painted on its outside walls once. It's all faded now, though. Inside the school, almost everything is intact; desks are where they should be, the office is in order, and the halls are clean. There's just no evidence that anyone ever went here; notebooks, school records, and the like are nowhere to be found. The simplistic playground in front of the school is very rusted. It's worth noting that the elementary school is one of the most easily fortified buildings on the island thanks to its surrounding gate, sturdy brick walls, and many rooms to hide in.

16 - Beach (IMAGE) There's nothing about this beach that'd make you want to spend much time on it. It's covered in rocks and it's pretty dirty, plus putting yourself out there right in the open without any cover turns you into an open target for more enthusiastic players. However, if you wade into the frigid water and make your way past a rocky outcropping that extends past the shoreline, you'll find a secret area of the beach that's inaccessible any other way. It might make for a good place to hide.

17 - Cabins and camping grounds (IMAGE) A faded wooden sign hammered into the ground proudly declares this area as the 'SUNNYDAY CAMPING SITE'. The area opens onto a space for picnic tables, a biking path, and another large sign with a small map of the camping area indicating the types of birds that could once be found on the island, along with public washroom locations. Moving further into the camping grounds will bring you onto a cluster of wooden cabins. There are eight in all, each spaced about 150 yards or so apart. Most of the cabins are in very poor condition, although all of them remain fully furnished. What you'll find inside isn't very useful, though; the wooden furniture on the inside is just as rotten as the outsides, and the curtains, blankets, and sheets are all moth-bitten.

18 - South Lighthouse (IMAGE) This is the larger lighthouse on the island. The South Lighthouse looks like it's falling apart; it's suffered some serious damage from something or other. The attached shelter no longer has a roof, and the light at the top no longer works. The lighthouse tower itself is still solid and fortified, though, and its position on the very southern tip of the island is a pretty strategically advisable one- if you know what you're doing. If not, you might just be backing yourself into a corner.

19 - Museum (IMAGE) The museum seems to be more of a commemoration of the town that had once been here than anything else. Unfortunately, all of the exhibits have been cleared out, along with any other information it might have offered.
