Sometimes we talked when we made our rounds. Other times, we just walked in silence, mostly, like now. It was nice. Colder than California, I still wasn't used to it, hence the sweater I had put on, bright and yellow and oversized, the best kind. I held Oz's hand, no one really leading, just walking, as we did. These sorta romps were more numerous now. Ever since alledged 'soldiers' had been seen to be trooping around these parts. Inger had seen 'em in his dreams too, which I think I was one of the very few who had trust in those. Not sure what Oz thought, but he trusted me well enough
( ... )
I nodded to Willow and leaned close, nuzzling her neck. "Want to help the pups hunt for Maya?" The stranger was female... and Willow was still new to her 'wolf--although not as much as Daniel or Mac--and greeting a newcomer with a dominance fight was something I wanted to skip.
It didn't take long to spot the her and I made sure to make some noise as I approached. "Hey... I'm Oz. Looking for Halen?"
Despite how often I've denied it to my family, yes, I guess I am a dreamer. My thoughts can be miles away and nothing short of an earthquake will being me back to the present.
The sharp snap and crackle of crushed leaves and breaking twigs jolts through me like ice. And for one moment, I'm terrified. You'd think gaining a myth-like beast to your biological makeup would boost your confidence, but far from it. I'm far more twitchy since being bitten that I ever was when simply one hundred percent homo sapien.
The next instant and I relax. The sounds are not that close, nor are they meant to be stealthy. I stop in a dappled patch of shade and watch as two newcomers hove into view. One lad, one girl. Both quite mild and quiet looking. But still waters run deep. As I think these two do.
"Halen?" So it does exist. "I was told it was in this area." Despite the silent authority radiating off them, Oz and his lady friend don't seem openly hostile. Yet. "I'm Maria, or Ria if you prefer. It's a pleasure to meet you, Oz."
"I'm Willow," I said, more or less flanking Oz though I doubted it was needed. She seemed to recognise who we were - not who who we were. Just what we were, what we meant. That was always a little bit of a trip for me. It felt good to have power like that. Even if it wasn't outward and obvious. Looking at Oz, I nodded, and didn't think twice about nuzzling his throat silently before heading in the direction back towards the cabins, shooting a smile to Maria as I went.
I figured Oz could be the one to handle her and besides, who knew what the puppies were doing. And Maya... I didn't want her any more frightened and nervous than she already was. Poor girl.
