Chapter 5
Saesha had on a pair of thick jeans, but she still lost out to the two men who had plenty of natural body fat to warm them even though they were dressed in Bermuda shorts, with no mind to the weather at all.
A little less than five minutes later, the three arrived at Jun’s apartment building. It was an old, well maintained building, with the walls looking clean and white like they had just been painted.
Uncle Akira walked confidently past the open gates and the maintainer’s office. He raised a hand in acknowledgement to a young man who was pinning up a piece of paper on the notice board outside the office.
There were many people walking about as they approached the lifts, all comfortably dressed in posh winter clothes, Saesha noted with longing. The topic of conversation turned to Jun as they waited for a lift.
“How old is Jun now? He's three years older than Saesha, right?” Sudesh started.
“Hm? Err, I think he’s twenty five now…”
Saesha’s father snorted.
“I bet you anything he’s 29.”
Uncle Akira’s eyes flashed at the challenge.
“Done. Loser pays for breakfast!”
Saesha smirked at the childish banter. The conversation was cut short, however, when a lift arrived.
“What’s he doing now? Is he working?”
Uncle Akira nodded. Then as if a realisation hit him, he turned suddenly to Saesha.
“Do you know Jun?”
“Eh? Um, I’ve only heard about Rei, Jun and me being together when we were kids, but I don’t remember him now, not at all.”
Uncle Akira seemed to be thinking about something.
“Well, you’re a musician, so I thought you might have heard of him…”
“Oh, he’s in music? That’s interesting. What instrument does he play?” Saesha asked eagerly, excited at the prospect of meeting a fellow music lover so soon.
Uncle Akira smiled and shook his head.
Ah, so she doesn’t know him then.
“He does many things, that boy,” Uncle Akira started sadly, “he’s always had a mind of his own, since the beginning.” His eyes met with Sudesh’s, who raised an eyebrow questioningly.
Before they could talk any further, the lift doors opened to the 10th floor.
The group then walked down the brightly lit corridor with a light smell of air freshener.
Ding dong!
Saesha and her father waited, a little anxiously, to see the last member of their family in Tokyo.
The door did not open. Uncle Akira pressed the bell again, no luck. Then, he started banging on the door loudly, startling the father and daughter.
Someone yelled from somewhere behind the door and it was yanked open half a minute later.
A tall young man stood in front of them in a faded red t-shirt and checkered blue boxer shorts. He yawned and scratched his head, messing his hair up further.
“Tou san….” He yawned again, and stepped back to let him come into the living room. He noted with a surprise that there were guests.
No longer sleepy, he greeted Saesha and Sudesh as politely as he could manage in his state.
“Sorry for the late notice Jun kun” Uncle Akira apologised as he gathered some books off the sofa.
“It’s alright” Jun smiled back as he carried the books and disappeared into his bedroom, where he dumped them on his bed.
“Are you off today Jun kun? Join us for breakfast?” Uncle Akira asked excitedly. He was desperate to show off his best friend to everyone and anyone. He wanted to show Jun off to Sudesh as well.
“Breakfast?” he hesitated, he didn’t really have any plans for the morning, and was planning to sleep well into the afternoon. He checked the time on his wall clock. 11 am. Well, it’s been weeks since he last saw his father…. Plus there was a girl.
“Sure, why not?” he dashed back into his room to get dressed, “give me a sec!”
He came out a few minutes later dressed in a pair of jeans and a checkered red shirt.
“Ok, let’s go!” Uncle Akira headed for the door.
“Um….”
The three men turned around to find that Seasha hadn’t moved from her spot.
“I’m sorry, but can I borrow a coat?” She asked apologetically, rubbing her arms covered in goosepimples.
Uncle Akira slapped his forehead and laughed.
“Aiya, I’m so sorry Saesha chan, Akira jii san is getting old, haha! Jun kun?”
Jun nodded and opened a door beside the apartment entrance and took a quick look at Saesha, sizing her up.
Muttering to himself as he flicked through the packed closet, he chose a short leather jacket and handed it to her.
“I used to wear this years ago, it doesn’t fit me anymore, but it should be perfect for a girl.”
She accepted it thankfully and tried it on. The warm and soft texture brought a smile to her lips. Plunging one arm through a sleeve, it got stuck midway. She tried to force her arm through, but it was no use. The jacket was too tight.
Akira and Sudesh were looking through Jun’s closet as he helped to get her arm out of the sleeve.
“He’s got so many!” Sudesh whispered in an awed voice to Akira.
“I know…. It’s the first time I’m seeing it…. Has he worn all of these?” Akira replied back in an equally awed voice.
They turned around like children caught peeking when Jun cleared his throat behind them, a smile on his face.
“Um…. We were just looking for one that might fit Saesha chan…” Akira grinned sheepishly.
“Yeah, here!” Sudesh randomly chose a brown wool button up sweater and shoved it at them.
“This? But it’s my size-”
“Shhhhh!” Sudesh shushed him, afraid that his daughter might hear the offensive words.
She didn’t hear them, and as expected, the sweater was too big.
“Good enough, let’s go!” Akira pushed Saesha and Jun out before they delay the soba any longer.
Jun and Saesha followed silently behind their fathers as the two older men chatted and laughed gaily all the way back to the soba shop.
Jun sized up the girl walking beside him, looking at her out of the corner of his eye. The top of her head came up to his ear lobes. Her hair was up in a messy ponytail. Hairs were escaping. Must be short. She had on a casual purple shirt unbuttoned enough to show a healthy portion of honey brown skin, and a faded pair of jeans - the cuffs of which were frayed. What surprised him was her shoes. They were of soft brown leather, supple and smooth. They looked casual, but Jun suspected they would have cost a bit.
He didn’t notice it at first, but she does seem a little pudgy. No wonder the leather jacket he reserved for girls couldn’t fit her, it had served its purpose beautifully numerous times.
He was beginning to feel bored. As interesting as the girl looked, she hardly looked at him. She just kept darting her eyes from one store to another, staring openly at strangely dressed youths loitering on the sidewalks. He felt a strange pleasure when he glanced at her hands clutching at his brown coat, though.
The shop was open now, and the group victoriously sat down to breakfast. The soba shop owner warmly greeted his frequent customer, delighted to no end at being introduced to a friend coming from the far off exotic Thailand.
