Akira looked at his son while they waited for their order to arrive. He was tapping on his smart phone, seriously intent on the messages he was sending. Saesha was looking around her, wide eyed and mouth agape at the curiously quiet yet busy atmosphere the little shop exuded. He looked beside him at his friend and found the same stupefied look on Sudesh’s face as his eyes were glued to every expert move the shop owner made. He jostled the man’s shoulder. It might look cute on a girl, but never on a 50 year old man.

Catching Sudesh’s attention, Akira nodded his head towards Jun and Saesha. Sudesh looked at them for a full three seconds and blankly turned back to his friend.

“What?”

“Tsk! Come here! Jun kun, jii san and I are going out for a minute.” Akira pulled Sudesh out of his seat and headed to the door.

Jun nodded his head in acknowledgement without pausing his tapping, just as a big steaming bowl of soba was placed in front of Saesha.

She stared in disbelief at the large bowl in front of her.

So much for being born here, she’s just another tourist... Jun smirked as a similar bowl was placed in front of him. He put his phone away.

“Itadakimasu” Jun said to her politely, and handed the still surprised girl a pair of chopsticks he got from the counter.

Snapping her eyes away from the bowl, she looked up at him full in the face.

“Itadakimasu” she replied with a smile and took the chopsticks from him.

Brown eyes… Oh.

Turning to his bowl, he continued watching her discreetly.

Is she…?

She arranged the chopsticks neatly in her fingers and slowly began sifting through the contents of the bowl.

It was like a treat to Jun. She was neat, and made no exaggerated movements. She quietly enjoyed her food, the satisfaction showing on her flushed round face and the upturn of her plump lips.

He closed his eyes and mentally thanked the powers that be.

Ready to start on his own delicious bowl of soba, he opened his eyes to find the shop owner staring at her with the same wonder Jun had.

Sudesh looked longingly through the glass doors of the shop at his daughter who was picking at the steaming bowl with her chopsticks.

“Sudesh! Are you listening to me?” Akira’s voice invaded his thoughts yet again.

“Akira, look! The food’s ready!”

Akira stopped Sudesh just as he was about to pull open the door again. He groaned impatiently and rounded on Akira.

“What do you think of us being here together?” Akira asked, looking through the glass at their children, and not noticing the look of extreme annoyance on his friend’s face.

“Well, I’m happy to be here, and I’m excited to eat soba again!” Sudesh said impatiently.

“Good,” he smiled, “What do you think of them two being here then?”

“What?” he glanced impatiently through the glass and back at his friend, not understanding what his friend wants from him.

“Sudesh,” Akira solemnly placed his hands on his friends shoulders, and turned Sudesh to face him “Let’s become more than friends.”

“What?!” Sudesh let out in disbelief, “What is that even supposed to mean?!”

Akira grinned excitedly and turned his friend back to the image of the two backs through the glass.

“Let’s become family, Sudesh! Look at them, there can be something going on there, I can just see it, they will both fall in love and get married, then they’ll live here in Tokyo and have lots of babies, we’ll all be here together!” He went on excitedly, not noticing the shocked look on his friend’s face.

“It’s our destiny, Sudesh. We were meant to be together.” Akira clasped his friend’s shoulder and led him through the glass doors.

Saesha noticed something was amiss when they left the soba shop. Akira was talking animatedly as before, but her father looked like he wasn’t even listening. He looked all of his 53 years all of a sudden.

She and Jun were trailing quietly behind their fathers again, walking home. Jun wondered if he should be walking in the opposite direction, back to his apartment, but was too lazy to do so and just let himself be led.

Dazedly looking around, Jun realized with a start that Saesha had broken into a jog, and ran up to hug her father’s arm. Now it was the three of them walking ahead of the lonely Jun.

What the hell…..

“Tadaima!” Hiroko was greeted by strong boisterous voices, pleasantly surprised to see her son added into the group.

“Jun kun, take Saesha and show her around the house, Kaa san and I have something to talk with Sudesh jii san.” Akira tossed Jun two cans.

Saesha looked worriedly at her sombre father as she released his arm.

What am I, a baby sitter?! Jun thought, irritated. Nevertheless, he politely ushered the girl out of the kitchen.

Hiroko noticed that something was wrong as well. What happened to the happy and enthusiastic man she had sent out this morning?

“Hiroko, sit down, Sudesh and I have just had an awesome plan!” Akira said excitedly as he pushed Sudesh to sit on one of the dining table chairs.

Akira looked in the kitchen doorway to make sure they were alone before he started in an excited whisper.

“What do you think of matching up Jun & Saesha?” He whispered theatrically at his wife sitting across the table form him.

Surprised, Hiroko blinked repeatedly, digesting the suggestion her husband had just given.

She heard a sigh from her right and turned to see Sudesh slumped in his chair.

“She’s only 26….” He muttered, his face full of fatigue.

Ah…. So that’s what’s happened, Hiroko smiled sadly at her friend.

“And Jun is 29! And they’re both musicians, and they love music, and you saw yourself how well they got along just now!” Akira continued, his excitement & imagination getting the better of him and filling out the empty and quiet interactions between the two youngsters.

“Akira san,” his wife started reproachfully, “you know we can’t do something like this to the kids, Saesha chan just got here, and you can’t force this on Jun kun either, remember what we talked about, about letting him decide what he wants with his life?”

“But…” Akira sputtered helplessly and looked around at his friend for help, who was not much help at all. He seemed to still be in a shock.

“She’s only 26….”

*********

Crazy old man…. Who drinks beer at 12 in the afternoon?! Jun placed the two cans of beer his father had carelessly tossed at him on the coffee table in the living room.

Saesha was distractedly looking at the photos hung up on the wall. Photos of Jun’s family, friends, some were of Rei and her friends, and some were of the parents and their friends. She even found an old picture of her father and Akira looking all goofy from the 80’s.

“So…” Jun started, awkwardly trying to start a conversation.

Saesha turned sharply towards him, shocked out of her own distraction.

“Erm… How was your flight?” he ended sheepishly.

“It was good, thanks,” she smiled, “I met Rei last night, your sister right?” she ventured, feeling sorry for her host who seemed to be having a hard time with her.

Jun smiled and nodded. Glad to have something to talk about, the two of them settled down in the living room, talking about their siblings. Although she missed hers terribly until just this morning, talking about them and their antics had helped her feel more comfortable.
