My brother loved Philmont. He got to make three trips there, and had a helluva good time every single time. Maybe I'll get a chance to take my boy there sometime.
One of the advantages of the Pacific Northwest is the variety of available hiking and camping options. Want mountain trails through goregeous lakes? An hour's drive. Want a flat wetland hike to look at ducks and such? Forty-five minutes. Want to hike in high plains/near desert? Get over the mountains in summmertime, about a three hour drive. And the beach is only a couple hours away, if you want a nice beach hike.
