I'd bet the waning abortion rates have more to do with the fact that most of the people who were having them (baby boomers and gen x) have come up to or passed menopause - not to mention, the baby boomers are finally losing social power (members of that generation were seriously responsible in perpetuating the myth that abortion is victimless).
it doesnt surprise me, i had my daughter in 2007 (unplanned, not married) & i seriously know like 20+ people from high school & friends who have had kids around the same time or since then & very few people were married, a lot of shotgun weddings, or just didn't get married at all. i think it's good so many people are choosing life.
I think it's because of societal acceptance of unwed motherhood. It's no big deal to have a kid when you're in high school, now. Some of the high schools even have daycares. So, if it's really up to the girl, she'll most likely choose to keep the baby, if she possibly can. Most girls aren't worried about a baby "ruining their future" anymore, because they can see women all around them juggling babies, kids, work, and school.
I think a very large part of it would have to go towards teenage mothers being way way more accepted than before. My one friend had her first son in August 2005 when she was 16 and another is due in June with her first. She is 17. It's not such a "shameful" thing as it used to be.
Also maybe the availability of going to a pregnancy clinic instead of Planned Parenthood? My church sponsors a pregnancy clinic in town where they help young mothers with clothes, food, how to get aid, how to get a job, how to take care of a baby, etc. It is very cool.
My junior college would give out condoms from Planned Parenthood...with an ad from PP stapled onto the condom. I laughed and laughed.
