Beta: pinkeuphoria1
Pairing: Bem/Natsume
Word count: 410
Rating: PG
Genre: Angst, Romance
Notes: Spoilers for the last episode. Hi, alienashi, I'm sorry this is so short and crappy but I wanted to give you some birthday fic with some Bem and Natsume because we both love them so dearly but I've had a couple of alcoholic glasses by the time I'm writing this and I'm still incoherent about today's episode and this was put together rather quickly, so... I'm very sorry for the quality ♥ I'll write better Bem/Natsume fic later sdfghjkl ;;A;

Summary: Bem can’t make Natsume decide.

Bem loves Natsume.

He doesn’t love him more than anything, kind of. Sometimes, in a weird sense, he almost manages to make himself believe that he does - he feels like there are no boundaries to whatever lengths he would go in order to keep Natsume safe, sound and happy. The bond they share is rather unique compared to anything he’s ever had before. It’s nothing like his relationship with Bela and Belo, who feel like family to him. He knows he’ll protect and follow them forever and wherever, but he also knows that’s not quite where he stands with Natsume.

All he wants is to see the man’s face light up as he smiles. He looks warm and soft then, when his eyes crinkle and the muscles strain in affection. For Bem, he’s the very picture to go with the definition of the word “love”. Natsume is kindness, even when he cracks and hovers towards the typical humane traits Bem has seen right in front of his eyes way too many times: spite and revenge.

Still, Bem trusts in him, he believes in Natsume’s just and caring nature. There’s no other human he has such strong respect and admiration for.

It’s difficult to have such strong feelings for a married, human man. When he looks in Natsume’s eyes that reflect the very same intense emotion that he feels bubbling in the pits of his stomach, he feels them pushing against the boundaries of their friendship. He can’t do this, can’t go on like this. Sometimes, he worries, Natsume cannot either.

When they are found out again and it’s time to disappear, he doesn’t let Natsume know his whereabouts. He stalks him, just as always, but never makes direct contact. He’s alright just being his guardian angel, or whatever he is for Natsume, his saviour in the depths of the night-time mist.

No matter what, he cannot be unkind and steal Natsume away from his family. It’s only alright being a monster, if it’s to save Natsume from that horrible decision. In order to protect him, and everyone else too, he can be a monster forever.

For him, it’s enough to hear Natsume’s hoarse voice speak the soft syllables of his name to the darkness, to see that shaky, appreciative and heartfelt smile. Then Bem can smile too with a tear in the corner of his eye, and feel like he’s got something no other humane monster can ever have.
