EXTENDED WORLD INFO

promenade is all in the mind

While it looks like things are happening by someone else when you look in your mirror (think first-person-shooter) and see what’s going on back home, it is, in fact, being done by you; there is no double, no doppelganger, no replacement. That person doing all that? That’s you. Only your consciousness has been dragged into the deepest part of your mind, into a location everyone shares, and through the magic and work of the Unnatural, all who enter here experience the same thing- the unending city that is known as Promenade.

memories

Memory tends to linger so long as the person is a strong-willed one (having charms to prevent memory loss never hurts either). If the person does not possess a strong will, the process begins a few months or more after their arrival, and very slowly but surely they will forget they ever existed outside of the world they’re in now. Players will be given the choice and told it is up to them how far they want to progress over time.

holidays

• Paradisiaca - A two day celebration in which the safety of the city is proclaimed and kept in good spirits. Mid-to-late January.
• Soledate - Two weeks where it's day, all day. Songs, speeches, and games are common. The King sleeps during this time. Mid-July.
• Lunamane - Two weeks where it’s night, all day and night. During this time the quiet is lead with processions, plays, and entertainment such as gypsies, etc. The Queen sleeps during this time. Mid-December.
• Ritornare da fias - A week-long celebration in which spirits of those passed come alive. Homes might be locked, pranks pulled, etc. Late October.

the unnatural

The Unnatural is the building that was created to house both science and protection for the city. It serves as a jail, a mental asylum, and a place for people who both the royalty and the scientists think are too unstable to live with the residents, and are trying to bring them back to being sane. It’s used to monitor and also keep any strange/odd/nightmarish things from entering or happening in the city. Certain barriers were placed within the city to prevent possible future dangers from being thought up or created (such as massive weapons of destruction, storms of hell and other such problems, etc). Keep a note, most of the time the city is on a 24/7 parole, so hiding things will be difficult, unless it’s actually in a building. They do allow some privacy, at least. As for powers, within the first few feet the subject begins to feel weak and sick- when they actually go inside, all the powers disappear. If it’s not powers, the system makes AI’s malfunction unless they have the code/ID that they belong in there. It takes a bit longer because shutting down everything via machines is more difficult than just shutting things off for an organic life form. The system would become unresponsive after a certain amount of time. Also, for normal humans, they feel sick to their stomach and incoherent if they’re without the wristband and tags. As for who else in there, there’s a good 12-14 subjects contained for dangerous habits/conjuring tricks, but most of the other rooms are for study, lounging, or experimenting. Genero has his own quarters, and then there’s the torture chambers/jail downstairs. The halls are all white and pristine, without a spot or blemish anywhere. It’s kinda creepy. Most of the rooms are clean and kept in a neat fashion, you hardly ever see any blood anywhere. Unless you’re down below. Then it’s all over.

death and revival

Death is reversed mostly by the consciousness. Since the body itself is still alive and awake on the outside, it’s not difficult to pull the “soul” of the person from the city, and revive them. What happens is that they gather the necessary parts to find a soul and then use magic to bring the soul back together. When this is done, either the body is remade or heals and awakens in the Unnatural, or if it’s elsewhere, the soul returns to the body there and heals and then the person awakens. However, if the body is dead on the outside world, it takes longer. Where it might take 24-48 hours for an alive person, it’ll take 72-96 hours for those who are dead. This is because the Unnatural has to pull from both the outside world as well as their own, which uses a lot of resources and exhausts people if a lot are done in one session. After that, the same rules apply.

the palace

The palace is, for the most part, like a normal palace. It has a ton of rooms and a lot of stairs and regal stuff and chandeliers, though what goes on behind them is often left unsaid. Usually it’s business on how memory loss is happening/why people can’t remember living in Promenade, things happening in the Unnatural, how the city is fairing, stuff like that. If citizens are being unruly then they’ll go into a protected room where you need a special key to get in. Underneath the palace is a long underground tunnel, used for servants getting in and out, as well as a means of escape should the need arise. There’s a barrier about 40 feet from the entrance into the palace, one that’s clear and invisible but definitely felt if you walk into it. Mostly you can’t get in by approaching it from one end, you have to come the other. Basically, if you leave the castle and forget something, you can't go back past it.
The castle itself is protected from most, if not all, weapons and magic attacks. Now, if it was hit by a god there’d be a bit of trouble, but the god would have to do a lot in order to really scratch the surface. It’s also very well guarded by the NPC guards.

the gardens

The gardens are basically what they say they are. There’s a section cut off for the King and Queen to use for their own purposes, away from view, but other than that, there’s nothing extremely special about it. The flowers change with the seasons, though.

the forbidden paths

The Forbidden Paths are essentially an old part of Promenade that was abandoned after the city took a devastating shock and hit from a nightmare. It wasn’t by the Unnatural’s means, but by the Exile who thought the worst things for the city to happen all at once, and it was enough to literally tear the city asunder and throw everything into chaos. It lasted for weeks, people dying and being revived and being terrified for their lives. Eventually, they were able to rebuild and end the nightmares, but as a result that part of the city was so damaged that they couldn’t fix it. Noticing that the Exile still visited it frequently (for reasons unknown to them), they barred it off, telling people it was too dangerous and that they were last seen there. No one complained. As for what the Exile was looking for, it was a book that Ezio found with Krypta when they had first gotten in. A log, detailing who had come in, where they were from, what years/times, and how long it was until they were gone (memory-wise). It’s written in code for the last part, as god-forbid anyone in the royalty or Unnatural find it and realize people know, all hell would break loose. Tony has the original.

the ocean

The ocean is mostly calm, not very dangerous, but there is aquatic life there! Sirens, Loch Ness monsters, fish, as well as other mythological and normal animals can be found there. Also, while it’s mostly like Promenade’s main road, it does have spare islands here and there. They’re uninhabited other than by animals, and aren’t that big, but they’d be good for exploring. The type of islands they are... think Swiss Family Robinson and that’s the general idea!

the guards

The guards and, presumably, the scientists and royalty, don’t get their powers leeched while in the Unnatural because of two things: they have a special wristband that notifies the system located in the building to nullify the leeching around them in the areas they move in, and they have an ID badge on them at all times within the place. Player guards will receive these so that they can move around the Unnatural without ill effects. The guards of Promenade vary in temperament and skill; some are loyal to the royalty, others to justice, others to the city, and still others to the scientists. Because of the variety in temperament, punishment dolled out by the guards typically depends on the situation. Some guards are more tolerant to citizens not wearing masks, and others will haul them into the Unnatural simply for having a poor attitude. There are guards that could easily be a part of a standing army and others that are more suited to spy work, and some that are clearly civilian volunteers. Those positioned around the Forbidden Paths, the Unnatural, and the Castle are typically the strongest of the bunch.
