CHARACTER
Name: Kanda Yu
Series: D.Gray-man
Canon: OU
Age: 19 20 in game
History: Kanda, in a previous life, was an Exorcist and Innocence wielder of the Black Order. However, he was killed by an Akuma - demon - as well as the woman that he loved.

Kanda was then reborn as a "Second" Exorcist as part of the Synthetic Disciple Project nine years prior to canon thanks to the efforts of the Chan and Epstain clans. His body was given the ability to heal quickly in order to survive Innocence synchronization testing. Due to this, his body was soften subject to cruel and painful procedures in order to be able to synchronize with Innocence. Even after "death," the procedures continued.

Eventually, during this process, Kanda started to get along with a fellow second Exorcist, Alma Karma. However, Kanda was a first very hostile toward the other, and they would often get into scruffles and arguments. Because of their shared experiences, Kanda eventually started to lower the wall around himself. They had even shared a laugh with each other, at one point.

At some point during these experiments, Kanda began to have dreams about a woman. He assumes it is Fou, guardian of the Asian Branch of the Black Order, since Alma had told him about seeing her after experiencing distress due to synchronization testing. The dreams then started to escalate, showing Kanda his "death" as an Exorcist. When the Order caught wind that this was happening, they decided that there was only one solution: To kill Kanda Yu. Hearing this, Alma manages to get Kanda to safety - briefly, anyway, and wounded - despite being captures by CROW in the process.

Kanda's washed away in the sewer, and resurfaces near Noise Marie and Bak Chan. Marie pulls the needle out of Kanda, allowing the wound to heal itself. The exchange between the three was brief before Kanda was taken away by a member of CROW for "learning the truth" to the Second Exorcist program. They fail to do so, as Kanda's memories from his past life, of the woman he had dreamed about, bring him back to life. Not only that, but it allows him to summon the Innocence Mugen and forms it into a sword, which he uses to free himself.

During his second escape, he runs into Noise Marie again, and notices that he's injured. Upon closer examination, Kanda's blood drips from him and into Marie's wound, healing him. Kanda then decides to take Marie with him in his search for Alma, but upon finding his fellow second Exorcist, he discovers that he's killed both the staff of the Asian Branch and members of CROW with his own newly obtained Innocence.

A battle ensues then, despite how relieved Alma is to see Kanda alive and well. Marie's knocked away from Kanda before he loses an arm. Kanda's also severely wounded at this point, with being dealt a second blow to the chest. Alma then goes on to explain why he killed everyone, and in doing so his anger continues to get worse and worse, stronger and stronger to the point where he can't control his emotions any longer. Alma impales both Marie and Kanda.

Not wanting to die, Kanda lashes out. He cuts Alma in half, and it can only be assumed that's how Alma dies, as far as Kanda is aware. What happens during the time between Alma Karma's death and Kanda's first canon appearance is unknown.

Prior to when he is first seen in canon, and years after his time at the Asian branch, Kanda is given a mission to investigate the odd happenings surrounding the town Dankelm, especially after a group of Finders had been send to do so and mysteriously disappeared. Kanda’s mission was simple, despite the oddity surrounding Danklem: Find the Finders, and if they were alive, save them.

It was a simple enough mission, just looking at it. As Kanda approached the forest, his guide warned him that going into the forest would only get him kidnapped and eaten by a witch. Kanda was surprised to hear that such a thing still existed even now, but ignored any and all warnings and continued on into the forest. Kanda walked through the forest, a forest dubbed “Forest of No Return” due to many missing people, he sensed no one. No humans, and definitely no Finders.

Very suddenly, however, Kanda sensed the approach of someone, both by their hushed footsteps and killing intent. Kanda spun and defended himself, revealing his attacker to be none other than an akuma. The akuma itself was easy enough to dispose of. No wonder people disappeared in the forest.

At the sound of hearing someone else in the forest, Kanda quickly demanded who they were, revealing one of the missing Finders, and the only one to survive. Goz, the Finder, explained what had happened. In the middle of this, Kanda hushed him as more enemies surrounded them. Kanda managed to kill all but one, who had taken Goz as a hostage. When faced with the threat to the Finder’s life, Kanda simple said “Do whatever you want.” This surprised both the akuma and Goz. As soon as Kanda lowered his sword, the akuma pushed the large Finder at Kanda and fled, leaving the Exorcist unable to pursue him. Suspecting that the akuma fled to the village, Kanda and Goz followed.

When the pair neared the village, it appeared to be utterly deserted by how uncared for it appeared. Goz, noting that Kanda was covered in akuma blood, suggested that Kanda clean himself due to the virus and in fear that it might scare the villagers off. Kanda refused, stating that such a thing was stupid.

It started to rain lightly at that point and the two decided finding a place to stay would be in their best interest. They end up staying at a small general store, after Kanda picked up noise from inside of the building. There, they met a single old man, who, when questioned, knew nothing of the happenings outside of the village. Kanda decided to ask the other villagers for information, but was stopped by the sudden downpour. Since there was nowhere else to go, the old man offered a single room to the two to stay in for the night.

Goz determined that night that Innocence was not involved, however Kanda couldn’t leave despite his mission’s simplicity. Not while there was an akuma on the loose. At the same time, Kanda couldn’t just let Goz return to the order on his own as well. He’d have to endure the Finde’s company a little longer, especially if it meant the townspeople would be more willing to talk to Goz rather than him.

Later, at dinner, Goz questioned the old man’s daughter Sophie, who had returned to the village only ten days ago. She had come through the forest, they discovered, but on the way through she didn’t encounter anyone. When questioned about the village’s infamous “witch,” Sophia only said that she was nothing more than an old, ordinary human.

In the middle of the night, Kanda woke up to something unsettling - Goz was missing and the door was left wide open. Kanda grabbed his sword and headed out, quickly finding a trail of jelly beans leading out of the village. He followed the trail, which took him to a small hut outside of the village. He could only assume that the hut belonged to the witch that had been mentioned during dinner. Before Kanda could decide on whether or not he wanted to go inside of the hut, though, he was attacked by the akuma he had been looking for. He killed it with ease, and was taken by surprise when the demon said “I’m sorry, forgive me,” as its final words.

Putting that aside to deal with later, Kanda went inside the hut to find it, initially, empty. When he ventured further in, he found Goz tied up on the bed and the old man from the general store. Kanda demanded to know if the old man was an akuma too, and surprised him. The expression he gave Kanda in response confirmed that he was, in fact, just an ordinary, helpless human. When Kanda ungagged Goz, the Finder immediately stated that he had woken up to find himself in such a state, and that the old man had actually been trying to help him. When asked how he even got to be in the cabin, Goz explained that he had been chasing a steak in his dream. That didn’t make any sense to Kanda, but freed the Finder anyway.

Once Goz was freed, the old man begged for both Kanda and Goz to leave the village and never return. The forest was turning out to the least of their problems when compared to the village as a whole, it seemed. Kanda, however, wanted to find out more about the so-called “witch” and why akuma were appearing around the village. Upon their return to the store, they met Sophia, and Kanda confronted her. Sophia explained that there was a legend stating that there used to be an evil old woman living in the hut who ate children, but there was no way such a legend could be true. The only person living in the hut was in fact an old woman with no relatives, and in exchange of a place to stay and the bare essentials, this ‘witch’ lived in the hut, despised by the villagers, and was deemed an evil being that would attract all evil calamities that would befall the village onto herself.

It turns out, that while Sophia was away working to save up for medicine, the witch had passed away and the village had chosen Sophia’s twin sister to be her replacement. When asked what had happened to her sister, Angela, Sophia broke into laughter. Sophia’s speech changed then, and instead of identifying herself as Sophia, she started to refer to herself as Angela by saying things such as “it was only natural I was selected,” and “I had been dead.”

It didn’t take much to put two and two together. Sophia had returned to the village to find her sister dead, and called for the Millennium Earl in despair, turning her sister into an akuma. Sophia-no, Angela now had killed the villagers, and Kanda realized then that the akuma he had fought were residents of the village. Kanda ordered Goz to flee, and once he had left the store to avoid fighting in confinement, Angela’s father came, but was killed as well.

Goz, moved by the whole ordeal, asked if Kanda really was going to kill her. Naturally, being an Exorcist, the answer was obvious. Goz, frustrated by Kanda, stated that he had no human emotions at all. Kanda retorted, and afterward simply ignored the Finder in favor of advancing on Angela, though cautious since he did not know what she was capable of. However, before he could get too close, Kanda was approached by the remainder of the villagers that had been turned into akuma. Their numbers weren’t light, and after several minutes of fighting them, Kanda started to feel overwhelmed by the sheer number.

While he was fighting, Kanda caught sight of Goz attempting to fight off the akuma with a simple hatchet. Kanda hurried over, and during his rush an akuma came up behind Goz with an axe in hand, ready to end the finder. Kanda barely made it in time, and shoved Goz out of the way, and in the process gaining a cut across his chest from the axe. Goz rushed to help Kanda, but was told to stay back. When Goz had left the battlefield, Kanda returned to fighting, using his Innocence to cut down on the number of akuma instead of simply cutting through them one by one. Once they were all dead, Kanda continued toward Angela despite starting to feel…off.

As he prepared to attack Angela, Kanda found himself - very suddenly - in his own room at the Order’s castle. Nothing looked out of the ordinary; everything felt real, so it had to be his room. But, on the table where Kanda’s lotus hourglass sat with its two petals on the bottom, began to suddenly wither and die. The petals turned black and fell to the bottom, and the only thing Kanda could do was stare at it in complete horror and disbelief.

Goz called out to Kanda, assisting in pulling him from the illusion that Angela had him in. It was then that Kanda was able to figure out Angela’s ability to read her victims’ minds and show them what they want the most. Kanda attacked, killing her.

Although he wouldn’t admit it, once he turned to the Order the first thing that he wanted - no, had to do was check on the lotus in his room. The vision had made him restless and anxious, and he couldn’t get it out of his head. When he saw that it was safe, with only two petals at the bottom, he was relieved. It was at that time that Goz had paid a visit, insisting that Kanda properly treat his injuries. Kanda refused, only resulting in Goz to insist. He gave in and allowed Goz to take him to the infirmary where his wound was bandaged.

While in the infirmary, the gatekeeper bellowed loud enough for the entire castle to hear. An akuma had arrived. Kanda acted immediately and left, off to confront the akuma with white hair, who later turns out to be Allen Walker, mistakenly identified. He was first on the scene, and after a short scruffle, manages to damage Allen's left arm. After brief questioning about said arm, Kanda attacks again, and is this time stopped by Lenalee Lee. When Allen tries to introduce himself civilly to start over fresh, Kanda flat out says "Like I would shake hands with someone that's cursed." They had one other altercation, in the cafeteria, afterward due to Kanda's insensitive treatment toward the Finders, which only adds to their mutual dislike for one another.

Unfortunately for Kanda, he's chosen to work with Allen on a mission to Martel, Italy, to investigate the local "ghost" there, as it may have connection to Innocence. They run into a Level Two akuma, which has the ability to literally mirror their opponents appearance and image. They do find the Innocence, between scruffles with the akuma, in a doll named Lala. Kanda wants to take it from her, but Allen objects, wanting to let Guzol's wishes come to pass. Their argument over this is interrupted as the akuma finds them in hiding. Allen tries to fight it, since by this point Kanda has already been injured. He's hindered by his Innocence, forcing Kanda to step in to protect Allen. They work together, for once, to defeat the demon and eventually take the Innocence. Kanda, despite his serious injuries, is fully healed within three days and leaves for another mission.

Kanda doesn't appear again until he joins up with Daisya Berry and Marie Noise in search of their teacher. Daisya's killed by Tyki Mikk during their search, and they've no choice but to continue on. When they do meet up with their teacher, Froi Tiedoll, they continue on to Edo, Tokyo, while being followed by Skinn Bolic, although there is never a confrontation before Edo between the Exorcists and Noah.

They arrive in Edo just in time, and Kanda's steps in to save both Choaji and Lenalee from Tyki Mikk. The two fight, and in the middle of it Edo is literally leveled out. As in, there isn't even a trace of Edo left, save for Noah's Ark. Lenalee is crystallized by her Innocence once more, and because of that, the Millennium Earl sets his eyes on her. Both Kanda and Lavi fight to protect her from the Noah, and manage to hold out until Allen arrives with his reborn Innocence.

Eventually, the Noah withdraw into the Ark, giving the small group of Exorcists a chance to rest. The chance is short lived, however, when Lero kidnaps Lenalee. Allen tries to save her from being pulled into the Ark, and it's a long chain of people - consisting of Kanda, Lavi, Krory, and Chaoji - that gets pulled in as well. There they meet Tyki, in White mode, and are given a key that leads to the doors that lead outside of the Ark. However, as the Ark is being downloaded into a new Ark and a room completes, that room starts to crumble. As they enter the Ark, they have two hours before it is completely destroyed.

The first room they enter belongs to none other than Skinn Bolic. Kanda tells the others to continue on without him, since he would be the one to take the Noah on. He promises Lenalee that he'll follow them when he's done with his fight, and only then does the group move on without him.

Kanda and Skinn fight, and Kanda is literally pushed as he activated his third illusionary style, which was deemed taboo by Komui simply because it drained his life force. However, using it increases both his speed and his strength. Kanda wasn't about to let himself be killed by an "immortal," not when he still had such a strong will to live, and not before he could find the woman from his dreams, years ago. At the price of Mugen shattering into pieces, Kanda is able to prove the statement "Noah can't die" nothing more than an exaggeration. Though, by the time the fight is over, it's already too late to rejoin Allen and the others, and Kanda is "lost" when the room collapses. When Allen repairs the Ark, Kanda, along with Krory, Lavi, and Chaoji, are revived.

Kanda returns to the Order with the others, where he's then forced to stay in the infirmary while he recovers from his injuries. When he tries to leave, Tiedoll prevents him from doing so. He's eventually released and allowed to return to his own room. The peace and quiet doesn't last long before Headquarters is infiltrated by the Noah. A level 4 akuma is set loose, and Kanda uses multiple normal - "weak" - swords in order to protect Komui, the akuma's target. He had even given gone as far to throw himself over the supervisor, but healed quickly. Even without Mugen, Kanda fights along with Lavi and Allen in order to protect Lenalee, Komui, and Hevlaska, getting injured again in the process. When Allen manages to hold back the level 4, both Kanda and Lavi help Allen by grabbing onto his sword.

Once the level 4 has been defeated, and the recovery process has begun, both Kanda and Allen are found having a sword fight in a bet where the loser has to cut off their hair. After that, he's next seen as a child, same as Lavi, as a result of one of Komui's potions. It's during this period where Headquarters befalls another crises, as there is a virus going around that, when affected, turns the victim into a mindless...vampire-esque being. Allen was bit once by the head nurse, but seemed to be fine due to his parasitic Innocence. When Mirana and Marie fall victim to the virus, the remaining of the group - Kanda, Lavi, Reever, Johnny, Allen, Lenalee, Howard Link, and Bookman - flee into a storage closet, where they run into Komui and one of his robots. It's there that they find out that Komui is somehow involved, and Kanda and Lavi both try to take it out on them.

The Generals attacked as the group was plotting and starting to move down the hallway, having been effected as well. Bookman and Link were bit by the generals, turning them as well. The group ends up being split into two, and Kanda ends up with Lavi, Allen, Komui's robot Komurin, and Johnny. By this point, Allen is unconscious and wakes up screaming Krory's name. Everyone shushs him, and then fills him in before a noise is heard at the door. It's Krory, but no one was willing to open the door themselves due to suspicion, and tried to get someone else to do it. Komurin was eventually chosen to answer the door, which revealed an infected Krory. A scruffle followed, and Allen managed to land a punch to the vampire which caused him to spit up the lid to a jar. It was then that the group found out that Krory was the source of the virus outbreak. Then that a bunch of infected members of the Order came after them, and they ran. They ran into the other group consisting of Komui, Lenalee, and Reever at this point, and shortly after Lavi, Kanda, and Allen were bit. It wasn't much longer after this that the entirety of Headquarters was infected, and it wasn't until Bak Chan came via the Ark was the virus reversed.

After Headquarters had primarily been moved, it was announced that Allen Walker was the 14th Noah. Kanda starts to treat him more coldly, as seem during their mission to recover Innocence from a dead chess player, and Allen makes note of it. However, when Kanda and Marie accompany Allen and Link to investigate a child named Timothy, he treats Allen a little better. Though, the problem with Phantom Thief G comes first. The group was sent to Paris to retrieve a group of Finders that had gotten themselves in jail under false accusations, and there they learn that G is, seemingly, an actual ghost possessing ordinary humans in order to complete its task. While talking with the Finders, a note from G comes in, stating its next target. The Exorcists jump on the opportunity and stake out at the building until G shows up. While they managed to prevent a precious crown from being stolen, they still failed to capture G. However, with Marie's hearing, they were able to trace the cries heard the previous night back to an orphanage. Only after did Timothy accidentally switch bodies with Allen did they realize that the child possessed Innocence.

While they were talking with Timothy and a few others in order to try and get him to agree to going to the Black Order with them, they were attacked by several akuma. Allen and Kanda take on the level 4, although they struggle while doing so. Allen tries to defeat the level 4 by piercing both himself and the akuma with his exorcising sword, which only targets evil. However, because of the Noah inside of him, Allen scars and is subject to the pain as well. The 14th temporarily takes over Allen's body, and instead of killing Allen as promised (he only kills the akuma), Kanda simply yells out "bean sprout" in order to get Allen to snap out of it. After they manage to kill the level 4 akuma and move on to help Timothy take out the remaining akuma and return to the Order.

At the Order, while training, Kanda discovers that experimentation had once again been picked up without Komui's knowledge when members of Crow - who are really Third Exorcists, part akuma - get into a disagreement with Allen. Kanda is less than pleased by this. He doesn't dwell on it long, since he's called to the Asian Branch by the sword smith Zhu, who requests his presence.

Upon his arrival to the Asian Branch, Kanda runs into Bak Chan while waiting for Zhu. They talk, primarily about Kanda's past while Fou looks for Zhu. Kanda brings up the Third Exorcists, and Bak starts apologizing for "hurting" Kanda, who in turn punches him to get him off, declaring that he "doesn't care what happens to the Order." At that moment, Zhu came and told him "That's not how we feel about you." Kanda has a flash back to his childhood, while Lenalee and Allen, at the same time, arrive to pick up Kanda.

The next time Kanda is seen is in Jordan, outside of the Order's camp where he encounters the 5th Noah, Wisely. Before Wisely can surprise and stun Kanda with the mere mention of Alma Karma's name, he's brought into Nesreca.

Personality: Kanda can be considered a loner of sorts. He's anti-social, cold, stotic, arrogant, and wants nothing to do with anyone. He prefers to work alone, to keep himself at a distance from everyone else. He doesn't need or require friends, after all. Things are done, for him, his way, and thus often goes onto missions alone, often leaving behind the accompanying Finder. Exorcists are not saviors, in his eyes; it is not their job to play God. It is their job to collect the Innocence and kill whatever Akuma happen to get in the way. If someone got injured, that was their problem, not his. He claims not to care, but as the series progresses, deep down he actually does care about his comrades, although he almost never shows it. However, if his fellow Exorcists get in his way, or don’t want to let him do things his way, then he isn’t afraid to let them know. He’ll even go as far as activating his Innocence to get his point across.

Kanda also isn't the brightest, either. More often than not, he'll forget about what's in front of him in favor or arguments and stupid rivalry. This is shown the most whenever Kanda is referred to by his given name, Yu. It's one of the many things that he hates, and because of such he only introduces himself as Kanda. Lavi, surprisingly, along with General Tiedoll, have been the only ones to call Kanda by his given name and walk away from the ordeal (though, Lavi is the only one Kanda manhandles). Other than being called by his given name, Kanda hates a lot of things - in fact, he says there’s too many things he hates, he can’t even list them all. Among his 'most hated' list are people who are cursed and those who cannot keep their promises.

While it's unknown as to why Kanda hates those who are cursed (such as Allen Walker, for example), guesses can be made about Kanda's hate for those who break promises. Kanda made one to himself - practically making it his life's goal - to search for and find someone from his past life. Watching as simple promises, such as protecting a life, get broken pisses him off to no end. In fact, Kanda even states that he hates people who break their promises more than idiotic, naive people. Who can one trust - or even rely on - in war if a simple promise can't be kept, after all?

Kanda can also be considered to be in the "rebellious teenager phase," what with his lack of respect toward others, and especially authority. In fact, the only adult that Kanda actually respects is his teacher, Froi Tiedoll. He'll easily go against orders from other figures of authority, such as Komui or the head nurse, as it just goes against doing things his way.

Third-Person Sample: One moment, Kanda was standing in front of a Noah, and a moment later...he wasn't. He blinked a few times before he started to glance around in an almost frantic sense, trying to make sense of what had just happened. Was the part of the Noah's abilities? Part of him wanted to know, but the other...didn't.

This place, whatever it was, certainly looked like it had been overcome by the akuma. At one point in time, anyway. Kanda placed a hand on Mugen's hilt as a precaution before he started to explore the barren city he was in. Buildings were crumbling, plants growing over every surface that they could find sunlight, despite the chilling air.

As Kanda wandered, he made note of the fading Russian signs in the streets and on a few buildings. Well, that definitely told him he was no longer in Jordan. The teen stopped for a moment, reaching up with his unoccupied hand to pull aside the collar of his cloak, allowing his Golem to free itself and flutter in the air in front of him.

"Oi, is anyone around? Bean sprout?" Static. Great, where ever he was, the was no other connection to any other golems. "...Tch."

First-Person Sample Journal Post: [See Kanda kneeling down, staring at the strange device as it records. He gives it a taptap with is sheathed sword, half-expecting it to jump up and transform into some hideous creature on him. But nothing happens.]

What the hell is this thing. It's on, right?

[He reaches down and picks it up, flipping it over in his hands to examine it even closer.]

This like a golem or something? [As he says that, his black golem flutters behind him out of curiosity. After more poking and prodding from Kanda, the feed's shut off.]
