third hour: closure - a grain of wisdom

[voice post]

[private to self | hackable]

"'To create ties,'" the fox said, and he did. Yet, somehow, it was in peace when it was the boy's time to go.

For all that I had learned of hitsuzen, I never expected things to turn out this way. It wasn't the first time she's left the shop for weeks, even if she hadn't said where she was going. I guess that I also imagined that she'd be there when I woke up the following morning, laughing like always, asking for breakfast and sake... [trails off into silence.

A few minutes later, the distinctive clink of metal on wood could be heard, followed by a match striking the phosphorus side of its box, producing a small flame. Watanuki sighs. Murmurs] It's different, this smell. As expected of Yuuko-san, to have a brand that can't be found in stores...

[exhales shakily and continues in a subdued voice] She'd either laugh at or scold me if she sees me like this. Or neither. Both.

[silence.]

I want to say that it's not fair. [weak laughter] It may have been inevitable, but some part of me still thinks I could have stopped it. Somehow. Some way. If I had known that that dream was already a sign of things to come, or if I had paid more attention, then perhaps...

[he swallows. When he speaks, his voice is thick with the struggle to suppress grief] You told me you wanted me to go on existing, and I promised I would wait for you, for as long as it takes. I'll do my best, because I gave my word...

It's going to be more difficult than I thought.
