By the end of probably the third day of wandering around and learning about modern things, Archie was definitely ready to spend the majority of his evening sitting indoors --or what he could pretend was indoors-- and reading. Well, listening to music too. He was becoming decidedly attached to the player although he did find himself missing his hat ( Read more... )

William, on the other hand, had spent much of the last few days, well, brooding. He had imagined that settling into his new job as part of the island's police force would somewhat lessen his restlessness, but such had not been the case. He continued to find himself staring out at the ocean for long hours at a time, no longer truly expecting a sail to appear on the horizon, but still wishing for it.

It was foolish nonsense, he knew. What was past was past, and what would be would be, and he should damned well make what he could of the present, as always. And yet he could not shake his discomfort.

Having spent the last few days mostly on his own (an easy thing to do, he found, when everyone he knew seemed so intent on mingling), he looked up, somewhat startled, as Kennedy came into the wikiup. "Hullo yourself," he replied, but offered little other greeting.

Archie frowned as it occured to him that while he had spent the better part of the last few days doing things, William had probably spent all of that time here.

Damnation.

But brooding about William brooding was just going to result in more brooding. The thing to do would probably be converse even if he wasn't sure whether the other man was going to grunt or converse right back.

He smiled slightly. "You were right about the compound. But... I found books and then Horatio found me so it wasn't too painful."

William snorted quietly. "I am more often than you might imagine, Mr. Kennedy," he informed the other lieutenant with a slight smirk - possibly a good sign? "Haven't been back to the damn place since, and have no intention of doing so."

"Glad you were able to occupy yourself, though."

"Then you must be right all the time since I've never known you to be wrong. In all honesty, I wouldn't have gone if not for the books. I think I'll go back again although not for long."

Archie wasn't looking forward to that at all but books had to be returned and he did want to check on Samantha if nothing else.

He laughed. "Oh, if only you knew the half of it."

He hoped William might manage to be slightly curious but if not he did at least have to show him the CD player.
