My dad used to ask me that when I was younger. I only read it much later on, when I was a teenager.

He was full of riddles, my dad, and most of them didn't make much sense.

That riddle is rather weird, isn't it? And they never even gave a real answer in the book either! Now I'm curious what the answer is supposed to be.
