Tutorial No. 29567602765...

With this tutorial, I'll show that light textures work on black and white line art as well.

Making this icon with almost nothing but lighting textures.

We'll begin with this image of Ran Fan from the recently released Chapter 56 of the manga Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa. The text has been blanked out because what's being said is rather spoiler-ific and that way everything'll stay safe.

Begin with the usual steps. Crop your image to 100x100. For this base, I actually duplicated it, set the duplicate to multiply, and then merged them together. The purpose of this is because it hides some of the flaws in a poor scan.

Set this layer to Multiply 100%.

Our first lighting texture is by colorfilter and it goes under the line art layer. It's set to Normal 100%.

The next lighting texture is by gender and goes between the first lighting texture and the line art. It's set to Multiply 100%.

The third lighting texture is by gender as well. It goes between the second lighting texture and the line art. It's set to Color Burn 100%.

Now because we don't want the textures to overwhelm her face, we're going to lighten them up a bit on her skin. Make a new layer between the third lighting texture and the line art. Take a hard brush and set the color to white(#FFFFFF). Photoshop's default 19px is a good size. I then painted her face, hand, and piece of cloth she's holding. However, we still want the textures to show through, so the layer's set to Normal 60%.

New layer between the white and the line art. I added a simple text brush by ohpaintbrush in black(#000000). The layer's set to Normal 64%.

I really wanted the whites of her eyes to 'pop', so new layer between the text brush and the line art. Using a 5px hard brush, I colored using white. The layer's set to Normal 100%.

Ok, final lighting texture. It's by myrasis and this time, the new layer goes on top of the line art. The layer's set to Screen 100%.

That's it, the icon's finished :)
