spent most of the day planting azaleas. it seems that digging holes anywhere in issaquah guarantees at least fifteen rocks to every square foot of earth. dad was telling me a few days ago about cutting wheat in north dakota. he said that kids in north dakota have to go into the fields every day to clear paths for the plows and combines. i guess ( Read more... )

There's a TERRIBLE Glass Family story called "Hapworth 16, 1924" which you may not have read. it's an a January 1965 New Yorker magazine. the last thing Salinger ever published, and probably the worst.

some people seem to like it. i can't love salinger as much as i used to because i've studied the hell out of him.
hapworth is basically seymour at age 7 talking about how religious and how smart he is ... there are some amusing bits though.

this is joel by the way but i figure you might know.

salinger is only for fun, for me. i read 'catcher in the rye' in high school, but that is the extent of my academic scrutiny. hi joel. i didn't look at your journal until today, so i thought, 'which joel?' rather a silly thought, as i only know two or possibly three. i did see a joel that i knew when i lived in vancouver on the street a week or so ago. he was playing violin at pike's place market. he made a lot of money. apparently he drives in from central washington university to play. it would be even more strange to meet him on the internet; that is why i was momentarily confused. i am sorry to make you endure this rambling little anecdote. i am afraid it has almost no redeeming value.

Kyle, you Holy Fool, I wonder if you're getting a sty (sp?) in your eye. They have free clinics where you could get it checked out, you know.

you don't sound like any of those negative adjectives, to me. I enjoy your style of speaking. it's not self-centered.

just to clarify, it's not the bashed knees that bring you comfort, but the recollection of them along with the related memories of living in Kansas and moving... right?

regarding the knee: a bit both, actually. it's hard to explain. it's comfortable for me to be lonely sometimes, and it's comfortable to have something that hurts a bit. moving hurts a bit, always. i like transitions, even though they are sad.

i think it definitely is a sty. i'm ignoring it and the pain is steadily declining.
