Still sick, but that's what I get for a weekend of sleep-dep and drinking.  Though, the sleep-dep wasn't entirely my fault, as I had precious few adequate places to sleep.  I did go to my first show in San Francisco, so that's cool.  Got a few more parking tickets, but I'm not worried.  Eventually they'll go into collection and charge me 10-20 ( Read more... )

Eventually they'll go into collection and charge me 10-20 cents on the dollar. Still, it's more or less permanently discouraged me from hanging out with Paul and Amy, which sucks.

Please explain to me this ingenious method whereby you pay less in parking tickets by ignoring them.

Okay, so I had some tickets from Indiana, Maryland, etc. The last time was Oakland. I had two street cleaning tickets, for like $30 each. After 30 days they went to $60, then to $90 (I don't remember the actual numbers, but you get the idea). About a year and a half or two years later, I get a letter from a collection agency: Pay up, or we'll put it on your credit report. I think it came out to about $40. And while I have plenty of problems with my credit report, those tickets aren't one of them.

This system only works, of course, if you're out of state, or otherwise beyond reach of the locals. I never did pay the one in Indiana (which was extremely dubious) or the ridiculous one I got at UW. That one was a fair ticket, I was in the physics lot after hours without a permit. But $280 is too much for a parking ticket. Especially when, had I parked on the lawn, (or just not in a space) the ticket would have been $35. That one I got out of through a technicality, as the car I was driving was registered in California to a dead ( ... )
