Posted by Wes: It made me think of my friend Scott's adage from back when we played together - he used to say, "Don't bore us, get to the chorus!" I swear some of the songs he wrote were into AND OUT OF the first chorus before a minute had gone by. Almost the complete opposite approach to songwriting as I had back then - quite possibly why we were a decent songwriting team. Anyway - even though BTN doesn't hit the chorus before a minute's gone by (I don't think), Scott's advice still applies if you boil it down to its inherent importance - do something very quickly at the beginning of the song to draw the listener in, to make them give a crap about the rest of the song, make them WANT to hear it all.
