But I came across the meanings of some names and found a few of them to be quite interesting:
Ben - Short form of BENJAMIN - From the Hebrew name Binyamin which means "son of the south" or "son of the right hand".
Justin - From the Roman name Justinus, which was derived from JUSTUS - Roman family name which meant "just" in Latin.
Iris - Means "rainbow" in Greek. Iris was the name of the Greek goddess of the rainbow.
Samson - From the Hebrew name Shimshon which probably meant "sun". Samson was an Old Testament hero of exceptional strength. His uncut hair was the source of his power, but his mistress Delilah betrayed him and cut it. Thus he was captured by the Philistines, blinded, and brought to their temple. However, in a final act of strength, he pulled down the pillars of the temple upon himself and his captors.
Clayton - From a surname which was originally from a place name meaning "clay settlement" in Old English.
Sofie - Variant of SOPHIE - French form of SOPHIA - Means "wisdom" in Greek.
Lila - Variant of LEELA - Means "play" in Sanskrit.
Apollonia - Feminine form of APOLLONIOS - From an ancient Greek personal name which was derived from the name of the Greek god APOLLO - From Greek Apollon, which is of unknown meaning, though perhaps related to Indo-European *apelo "strength". Another theory states that Apollo can be equated with Appaliunas, an Anatolian god whose name possibly means "father lion" or "father light". The Greeks later associated Apollo's name with the Greek verb apollumi meaning "to destroy".
Ruthie - Pet form of RUTH - From a Hebrew name which was derived from the Hebrew word re'uth meaning "friend".
Rita - Short form of MARGARITA - Spanish, Russian and Lithuanian form of MARGARET - Derived from Greek margarites meaning "pearl".
Sue - Short form of SUSANNA - From Sousanna, the Greek form of the Hebrew name Shoshannah which was derived from the Hebrew word shushan meaning "lily" (in modern Hebrew this also means "rose").
Libby - Pet form of ELIZABETH - From Elisabet, the Greek form of the Hebrew name Elisheba meaning "my God is an oath" or perhaps "my God is abundance".
Gabriel - From the Hebrew name Gabriyel which meant "strong man of God".
Norman - From an old Germanic nickname meaning "northman", referring to a Viking
Tommy - Pet form of THOMAS - Greek form of the Aramaic name Te'oma which meant "twin".
Henry - From the Germanic name Heimerich which meant "home ruler", composed of the elements heim "home" and ric "power, ruler". This name was introduced into Britain by the Normans.
What are you're thoughts?
