"språk" actually translates as both 'speech' and 'language'. In this case, the latter one is more accurate translation, because when you study languages, you study speech, but lot of other things too, right? ;)
So, 'speech' in English is - depending on the context - either "språk" or "tal". The word "mål" can also be used in certain contexts (e.g. 'mother's tongue' = "modersmål", i.e. "moders mål", mother's language/tongue).
If you want me to, I can check my dictionary for a more detailed description as for the context in which each word can be used. ;) (I am most likely going to do that anyway, as I could not come up with an explanation right away. :D)
