CHARACTER
THE BASICS
NAME(S): Gremio
CANON & TIMELINE: Suikoden I/Suikoden II, after the resolution of the Dunan Unification War at the end of Suikoden II
CHARACTER TYPE: Canon
AGE: 28

THE CHARACTER

APPEARANCE: Gremio stands at a record breaking five foot-ten inches, with a lanky, slight build that he keeps covered with multiple and many layers of clothing and light armor. He has waist-length blonde, wavy hair that he usually keeps held back with a single tie at the base of his neck, though sometimes a bit lower between his shoulder blades. His facial features are sharp and typical of residents of the region, and bares a large, cross-shaped scar on his left cheek. He's known for donning a long green cape in addition to his other clothing, which seems to cover him up as much as possible.

PERSONALITY: Gremio is, to say the very least, a strong, mothering figure. Because of the conditions at which he was brought into the McDohl household, and how long he'd been living and working there, his personality has developed into something much like an actual mother. He cooks, he cleans, and he gives his life to protect not only his charge, but all of those around him in that particular age group and younger. Although he is considered to be part of the family unit, he has a good understanding of his place among them, and refers to Tir McDohl, the son of the man for which he is employed, as "Young Master".

Gremio is unwavering in his complete loyalty to Tir, following him in everything he does, and supporting him just as well. He would (and does) sacrifice his own safety, health and life to protect his master, and never hesitates to jump between Tir and whatever he faces.

He is intelligent and skilled, not only in cooking and cleaning, but as a bodyguard and an axe warrior, as well. He has strong morals and finds himself lecturing those around himself whenever they act out in an attempt to improve them, rather than to seem superior. To him, the other members of the McDohl household are his real family, and they seem to think the same of him. He is dedicated and loyal, both as a servant and guardian, and as a friend. He finds it easy to sacrifice himself for the better of the cause. He brings out the best in people, and supports and encourages them as well as he can. He is an innocent and pure man, and would do anything for those he cares about.

As a Star of Destiny, he is listed under the Tenei Star, or Heroic Star, which seems to sum him up pretty well, in that it describes the Tenei Star as being someone who is protective with maternal qualities.

HISTORY & WORLD-BUILDING: Gremio was fifteen during the Succession War in which he served as a soldier under the command of his future master, Teo McDohl. After Teo saved his life in battle, Gremio felt indebted to the General, and, following the end of the war, took over the mundane household duties of the McDohl mansion, including raising Teo's only son, Tir. When Tir was still very young, he was kidnapped by Mt. Tigerwolf bandits, and, as the young boy's protector and bodyguard, it was Gremio who saved him (by killing all of those responsible). Though the battle was concluded with Gremio as the victor, he was left with a large scar on his left cheek. Following the encounter, he engraved the words "I will always protect young master" on his axe. Since then, he's been all but attached to Tir's side.

Living in the McDohl household along with Teo, Tir, and Gremio (at the start of the first game), are fellow guardians Cleo and Pahn, as well as Tir's best childhood friend and orphan, Ted. The four servants, guardians and friends accompanied Tir on his first missions as a soldier in the Royal Guards/Imperial Guard, a force of which his father was one of the Six Great Generals. After some to-do and an unexpected betrayal on Pahn's part, the group (sans Ted, who was critically injured, and Pahn, for obvious reasons) flees the scene. Team Tir/Gremio/Cleo meets up with Viktor, a mercenary employed by the Toran Liberation Army, and is brought into the forces of the army opposing that of Tir's father. Following the death of Odessa Silverberg, the leader of the Liberation Army, Tir becomes the new acting chief and Gremio follows faithfully, though he has some doubts about fighting against Teo. In the end, it comes down to the promise he'd made to Teo to protect Tir wherever he goes and through whatever he gets himself into, even if that means opposing the General himself.

This conflict between the Scarlet Moon Empire and the Toran Liberation Army would be known as the Gate Rune Wars, as the two opposing forces of good versus evil each had one of two sisters, Leknaat and Windy, who bore the two halves of the Gate Rune. During the events of the Gate Rune Wars, Gremio stays true to his word to protect Tir no matter what happens. He is Tir's guardian and closest friend, after the death of Ted. During a mission while part of the Liberation Army, Tir, Gremio and co. enter Soniere Prison to rescue Doctor Liukan, a specialist that can help them destroy the poisonous flower, Antoinette, keeping them out of Milich Oppenheimer's Scarleticia Castle. After rescuing the doctor, and while escaping the prison, the team was trapped in a sealed room where Milich Oppenheimer, another of the Six Great Generals, released his flesh-eating Spores of Agony. The switch to open and close the door was within the room itself, and Gremio rushed everyone out of the chamber to close himself in to protect them. He died a slow, painful death, making the ultimate and final sacrifice for his charge.

Toward the end of the Gate Rune Wars, Tir assembled the other 107 Stars of Destiny, and the power of the Back Gate Rune and Leknaat resurrected Gremio, who seemed confused upon his return. He returned to business-as-usual, staying by Tir's side even after the war had ended. Tir, torn by the deaths of Ted, Odessa, and his own father, Teo, left Toran in the hands of one of his Liberation Army soldiers, Lepant, then fled the country. Gremio, of course, followed. Even though Tir bore the Souleater Rune, Gremio felt that the young man still needed his protection, and never left his side again.

Three years later, Tir and Gremio made a brief appearance to help out Riou, the leader of the Dunan Unification movement during the Dunan Unification War, then disappeared just as quickly after the war ended in favor of Riou's army.

THE DETAILS

STRENGTHS/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Gremio shows on more than one occasion how skilled he is with an axe, both one-handed and two-handed. He's equipped with a water rune, though he's been known to dabble in the world of Earth magic, when necessary. He's practiced in the first three of four spells available from the rune, Drops of Kindness which heals a single person, Fog of Deception which lowers an enemy's attack strength, and Rain of Kindness which heals a group. He is a well-balanced and above-average fighter, relying equally on his physical abilities as well as his skill with runes. He's no master fighter or mage, but he can hold his own in a fight. His behavior around the members of his family strongly suggests he's a man of high intelligence and morals, and those around him seem to see him that way, as well. He's a shoulder to lean on and a wall to depend on, true and loyal to everyone he cares about. He has the makings of a prodigy cook and specializes in stew, even going so far as to share his masterful recipes with top chefs. If he hadn't been swept up in war, he could very well have gone on to pursue this talent full-time. He has all the skill of your every-day maid; sewing, cooking, cleaning, stocking, shopping, and running after the children like the best of them.

LIMITATIONS: He is, at times, blinded by his loyalty and resolve, even going so far as to sacrifice himself to save his young master without waiting to see if there was an alternative method of escape. It is as though he knew from the start that he would die in the service of the McDohl family, and jumped at the open opportunity to prove himself. He can come off as hot-headed and stuck-up, and often gets into arguments with anyone who tries to use, influence poorly, or harm Tir. His loyalty to Tir could, in itself, be his ultimate weakness, as he wouldn't hesitate to die for him again.

EQUIPMENT/PETS: He owns the Axe of the Oath, the final upgraded version of his weapon of choice. He is also equipped with a Flowing Rune, which allows him abilities/magic that focus on physical and status effect healing. Other than that, he usually travels with whatever he's wearing, and not much else. Because of Tir's tendencies to simply get up and leave, Gremio finds it easier to not attach himself to material things rather than miss them once he and Tir are on the road again. He's been known to produce cooking materials on very short notice, however. He has a small traveling pack with a few essentials such as a spare change of clothes, a log book for quick notes about the places he and Tir have visited, cooking supplies for use on the road, and a few knickknacks he's picked up along the way. As for his usual attire, he wears a long green cape/cloak, blue turtleneck shirt, matching blue trousers and boots, and various pieces of light armor, including but not limited to leather knee guards and breastplate.

THE WRITING

SAMPLE - LOGS: Gremio brought an arm up, using his forearm as a makeshift handkerchief as he swiped the fabric of his shirt over the sweat that had accumulated on his forehead. He took a deep, relaxing breath as he returned to the task at hand. He was crouched over what looked to be a peculiar growth of fungi, inspecting the variety of mushrooms sticking out from the base of the larger plant. Days prior, he'd discovered that one of the few types growing there was safe enough to eat without fear of side effects. Currently, he was at work harvesting a few for a meal he would prepare for himself. If asked, however, he'd have nothing but complaints for the lack of ingredients present in his new location. It seemed every meal consisted of raw mushrooms and little else, but he'd be damned if he wasn't going to try and cook a few of them, if only for the variety it would give his suddenly monotonous lifestyle.

He turned slightly, setting the two handfuls of fungi in the center of his cloak, which he'd spread out over the ground by his feet. He'd learned days ago that it was simply too warm to wear the heavy cape in the parts of the cave system that he frequented. Instead, the cloak served as everything else beside it's original intention. He folded the sides of the cape inward, successfully covering the collection of mushrooms, then held the bundled fabric to his chest as he stood straight again. He shifted the weight of it into one arm as he leaned to pick up his axe with the other hand, then turned in the direction of the section of cave he'd learned to call home. It was a long walk back to be sure, but he'd take sore legs over hallucinations any day if it meant eating safe mushrooms.

As he entered the cave he'd adopted as his own residence, his eyes gave the mercury fountain a once-over. He'd long since lost his initial interest in trying to pick out bits of conversation through the system, as the act always made him feel cheap and dirty. He wouldn't want anyone listening in on his conversations, either, but when he'd first arrived it was the only way for him to get information of the area short of just going up to people and asking. He stopped just inside the doorway, leaning down to stand his axe against the wall, then moved further into the dwelling to spread the cape out over the area where he slept. He reached into his pack and pulled out his log book, flipping through it quickly until he found the last page he'd written on, then settled his weight down next to the cape. He glanced from the book to the mushrooms a few times, just making sure they were the fungi he'd drawn a picture of a few days prior, then nodded to himself. Other mushrooms drawn on the page were small purple ones that caused such horrible pain in his abdomen that he vowed he'd never try to consume them again, even if he was promised he could go home, and large brown ones that seemed safe until he woke up the following morning, stripped naked and half submerged in the lake. He'd yet to figure out what exactly had occurred, but he feared further inquiry with the local population would only lead to more embarrassment, so he decided to leave it alone.

He picked up one of the newly acquired mushrooms idly as he flipped back through the log, then stopped when his eyes landed on the last handwritten passage before he'd woken up in the caves. In it, he wrote of the Young Master's experiences as a stand-in farm hand in a small town near the border between the Toran and Dunan Republics. Gremio had insisted that they take the village's offer to put them for the night and had gone to sleep shortly after making sure Tir was comfortable. He'd awoken here instead of in that shared room. He read the passage for the hundredth time, and wondered quietly for the thousandth if his master was okay and safe without him there. For Gremio, small poisonous mushrooms paled in comparison to the sorrow he felt at being separated from Tir.

SAMPLE - MESSAGE:
[The sound of a loud and (much to Gremio's dismay) far from masculine gasp is sent through the mercury system as he approaches it, only now realizing what exactly the fountain is for after staring at the flowing liquid for somewhere close to an hour.]

Young Master?

[A few moments of silence, as though he's waiting for some sort of response]

Young Master, if this is some sort of joke, I'm not laughing. I don't know where this is or where you are, but this is certainly not the best time to suddenly decide you have a sense of humor.

[There is a brief pause in his words, giving him just enough time to steady his voice.]

Young Master, you are seriously testing me now. I was put in charge of you and I will not stand for this sort of prank. I don't like this place. It's wet and murky and dark and just... unfit for humans. I can't stay here. I simply can not stay here and if you don't stop this nonsense this instant, there will be hell to pay. You could have at least left me something to eat. Or a washcloth. Or a hairbrush. Or perhaps some sort of a clue as to how or when I'm going to get out of here.

[More moments of silence, though heavier as he's actually expecting a follow-up this time. After another minute, a muffled thump can be heard as he drops to his knees by the fountain with the realization that his master will not be responding.]

Please, just... just let me know you're alright. You know how crazy I can get when I'm worried about you. This place is nothing compared to the horrible places you've dragged me through, but at least I knew you were okay then.

[His voice breaks for a moment, then he clears his throat and takes a deep, calming breath.]

Young Master...

[Silence again, though this time it is because he's left the area of the fountain, having given up on receiving a response.]
