Running

I am really enjoying the running. I never thought of myself as a runner so to find I'm getting good results fast and to be in such a motivating club it just really fantastic. Between the two walked marathons and getting back on the bike this year, I feel like I've got all bases covered ( Read more... )

I'm not enjoying it yet, but I am enjoying the benefits of it - more energy than I used to have, and strangely (I wasn't expecting this element) a new ability to see that things can be improved upon slowly with the right amount of effort, that life isn't necessarily about instant results, but about considered planning and preparation.

I'm at three and a half months and it's just getting fun. Being in a running club which is super cheap at £2 a week compared with any other sport, and staffed by experts, and attended by beginners of all ages has been very motivating indeed.

I considered joining a running club locally just so it wasn't me on my ownsome, but the ones local to me seem to be for the unemployed, students or stay-at-home parents (or at least, they all try to meet at around Noon on Monday or somesuch).

It could be something beneficial, but I don't think I need to be pushed by others just yet. I'm doing the odd run with my sister at the weekend who as a teen trained to try and become a professional athlete, so I'm not totally under-supported.

Shit run today, though, btw - to the extent that I made myself late for work as I had to walk some of the rest of the route home. It is strange the way the body sometimes just gives up. This is the second Thursday run I've had in a row which has been downright rubbish.

The thing with running is that you have to be in it for the long haul. You have to get over that initial tough six months and then you often find that not running is harder than running - you'll find a week off will leave you itching to get back out the door again.

And there are good periods and great periods and the occasional awful period (when you're injured or each run feels like a slog) but the days when your body seems to be running smoothly and efficiently on its own and your mind feels like a passenger are sheer bliss.

In just beginning to see that now. I am not running much yet, but this is more about not wanting to be out alone in the dark, but after each run I'm already planning the next.
