footnotes or endnotes?

Dec 15, 2011 09:04

Most of the venues I've published in prefer endnotes to footnotes, so that's what I currently have in this (almost complete YAY) draft of my dissertation, and it's what I'll stick with unless my committee tells me otherwise.

BUT... what do you think? Footnotes or endnotes? Why?

APA Format specifies endnotes, which is what I got used to for published material. It is also easier to deal with as a writer, IMO...

Personally, I prefer footnotes. That way I'll actually read them. But this should be taken with massive amounts of your preferred spices as I don't have any idea how it works in upper levels of academia.

I prefer footnotes. They're right there at the bottom of the page, so you don't need to go hunting for them if you want to see where something's from.

But that's me.

I will always prefer footnotes to endnotes, unless you're strictly only talking about bibliographic citations of some kind (a la "see page evelenty-one"). I HATE having to flip back and forth between the page I'm reading to get to the endnotes, especially if the notes are substantive (a la actual commentary or supplemental information, as opposed to a simple citation). It drives me INSANE.

My understanding has always been that except in law, endnotes are pretty much the accepted style/format.
