"You know," Kennedy spoke up clearly from the doorway where she stood, arms crossed over her chest and an expression that was trying to go for mulish but came out much more petulant on her face, "taking off like this? Way before diploma time and everything? Seriously uncool."

"I've had the training I needed afore I cam here," Beka reasoned, forgetting about her clothes for the moment. "And 't isn't taking off."

"So is," Kennedy countered, pushing away from the doorframe and into the room. "Boarding school kid, remember? I know packing-up-for-good packing when I see it. That is so taking off."

Her shoulders slumped a little. "Guess that means back to Corus, huh? Back to work."

...no, she couldn't have kept that trace of envy out of her voice with an army to back her up.

"Yes, my Senior Dogs have returned from their mission. I'll be placed with them afore they find a new partner for me," she tilted her head, studying Kennedy.

"There'll always be room for another Puppy if you ever want to."

"Someone needs to box their ears when they deserve it," Beka remarked, raising an eyebrow at him.

"This is absolutely, positively, outrageous." Oh yes, someone was throwing a tantrum. "You're supposed to simply leap at a command, with no notice, when they sent you here in the first place? I absolutely refuse to break in a new roommate."

"I did not know I'd been broken in," Beka sat down on the edge of the bed, frowning a little. "I would go either way," she said, "but I do want to go."

"So you reward their abandonment with your loyalty?" Emma asked scathingly. "Were you dropped on your head as a child?"

You could say much to her, but Beka stiffened at the insult directed to her Lord.

"No," she said with a glare that'd made her eyes look much like the ghost eyes people said she had. "I grew up in the worst district in Corus. He was the only one who'd listen to me when I went to the Dogs. He took me and my family from the streets and gave us a home, gave us a change to be more than Rats. He deserves my loyalty for he'd never abandon one of his Dogs."

"See, I don't remember you graduating with us," Rose said, tapping on the door frame.

"That's because I graduated afore I came here," Beka replied. She'd said sommat similar to Kennedy already. "You cannot tell me you disapprove of my leaving when you'll be going yourself."

"I could disapprove of both of us going," she pointed out, a little smirk on her lips.

"Not when you've been looking forward to it," Beka pointed out. "Or have you changed your mind?"
