I'm truly sorry for your loss. At least you got to know your great-grandparents. My last surviving one died when I was a mere child, in end-stage Alzheimer's, which means she didn't even know me, but thought I was my mother a lot. I still get misty-eyed when my grandmother slips up and calls me JoAnn instead of Beth Ann. Reminds me of great-grandma.

Thanks all of you. He really was a sweet and loving guy, with a hidden wild streak.

I'll never forget smoking outside of his house in Florida and feel guilty when he walked out on me. He must have saw it in my face and told Shan and not to worry, that he used to smoke over two packs a day until his first bought with cancer in the early 70s. He gave up all his vices then, except his evening glass of whiskey. Then the stories started up, he was a great story teller. My mom, who grew up with him never even knew he smoked, my dad, his grandson, barly remembered.

My mom's grandparents were best friends with Jack and his wife, they stood up in each other's weddings, so this is a loss for both sides. My great-grandparents (on both sides) were the only ones cheering on my parent's marriage.

Really, for his family, he died young. 86 is nothing in the Roe family, most live into their 90's, his grandfather lived to be over 100.
