I've read the standards some schools use to accept students. Students with high academic scores, but who didn't do run-around shit like volunteering, who didn't write a cute enough essay, or didn't fit the "profile" the school was looking for.
In other words - yeah, politics.

But affirmaitive action is one of the issues I'm on the fence about...because its so easy for me to see it from the other side...
Minorities are the ones who are in big cities, plugging along in the lowest income bracket - and its because of a number of things, but their place in society right now is a result of a number of things....but I see the justification: make college cheaper for minorities - more minorities enroll - more equality overall...
I mean, you cannot deny that white people (as an entire population) really have a leg up on college competition just by being born...
But I understand on the individual level that its really just plain unfair - one person to get in, or to get money just because of their race.
The intent of affirmative action is good, but its hard to measure its actual effects.

Equality isn't justice. As a caucasian male, I'm at no advantage in the Admission and Scholarship process, especially as a low-income rural male.
I didn't notice any blood sample or photo send-in with anything I've done.
It's not only white people who don't like the idea of Affirmative Action, promininant and successful minorities resent the idea that people assume they were given an unfair advantage.
Good intentions don't mean much :)

Affirmative Action also stigmatizes minorities as retards who need special help in order to succeed. Maybe this is true though, I'll have to research the subject some more.

Jon you said yourself that your school doesn't have the oppurtunites that larger, wealthier schools have and therefore that limits both you and your peers. Why then does this not apply to city schools, like the ones on the westside of syracuse? Both places lack oppurtunity, and (especially on the westside) a safe constructive learning environment.

I'm talking about scholarships being merit based, not racially based; there's whites, blacks, latinos, of both sexes and even more colors living in city schools -- and they all deserve equality.

Were you talking about this?

Then I was talking about How you complained about the lack of oppurtunity at your school.
