I don't think you have to worry about anything. Seriously. I say this from the perspective of someone who feared the same things--that I would leave high school, turn into a drone, and never see the beauty of the world because I couldn't pick my head up over the cubicle wall or something

Your school counselor sounds like she knows what she's talking about. If you are happy with your job, with what you 'do', then the money isn't as important. There are a lot of sacrifices you have to make sometimes, but you know what? They don't FEEL like sacrifices when you hold them up to 'what you could be doing'. I would rather drive my slightly beat-up Buick until it dies than get a new car with a car PAYMENT, if it means I get to spend my days doing something I love. I would rather eat out at chain restaurants and the local diner than go out for fancy meals at an expensive place, if it means my schedule is set by ME and not by some corporation. I would rather rent and borrow movies than buy them, if it means I can continue to pay my bills with the fruits of my spinning wheel. I know plenty of people who can't believe I feel like that--don't I want a newer car, nicer restaurants, a huge DVD collection? It's not like I'd reject them if someone gave them to me, but they're not so important to me as they are to others. I'm

lol 3rd year in highschool, and i'm starting to feel like this. sometimes i don't know whether i should stick my nose in my books so i can guarantee myself a great future or hang out with my friends as much as i can, since i'm constantly told to enjoy highschool as much as i can since it only happens once.
well, one thing's for sure-- enjoy the stability while it lasts :)
Hey kiddo, I'm sad we didn't get a chance to catch up when you were in Ohio.
But I wanted to say a few things about your post. I know that feeling. Hell, that feeling you have right now is going to come up and bite you in the ass a few more times in your life, I know it has in mine.
What I've done (and this doesn't mean it works for everyone, but it does for me) is plan. When I felt that way in highschool, I plotted college. I got to college and while I made the wrong choice in many money oriented ways, I changed my major till I found the thing that made me happy.
Every time I find myself in a rut, bored, the whole this is it, isn't it? This is life, it's nothing more than what I'm doing now and I am unsatisfied and bored feeling is when I know I have to do something to change it

As someone who's in college now and who went through all of this, take this advice:
Let your life sort itself out. I got to college knowing full well that the Computer Science degree I was chasing would stick me in that 9-to-5 scenario you talked about. It only took me one semester to scrap that and realize that I'm not in college to make money later on, I'm in college to help me direct my life to where I want it to go.
I'm gonna be a math teacher, because it would be something I'd truly love to do.
I may sound like an old fogey for saying this, but you're too young to worry about that now. Wait until after high school to decide what you really want to do with life.
Oh, and college doesn't mean you're gonna be in that 9-to-5 scenario for sure. That's only if you're a business major or something similar.
A lot of people who do get the degrees they desire, don't use them for a very long time, because sometimes by the time they're finished, the jobs they want aren't readily available.
I can't say much else that wasn't already said. But I will say this: how you feel right now about the way you've lived your life will tell you something about the things you truly value. Not necessarily what you did or didn't do, but how you feel about it now. And when you get to the end, it's going to be that definition - not anyone else's, but the one that is unique to you - that tells you how to feel about how you lived the rest of your life.
I heard Rise Against's Swing Life Away today, and I thought about you.
