Ah spring, the time of the year when California is flooded with strawberries.
I let myself be talked in to half a flat of organic berries at the Farmer's market this morning, and now I need to figure out what to do with all of them.
I'm considering strawberry ice cream and fresh berry pie, but does anyone have suggestions or favorite recipes?

If you're swamped, strawberries freeze well for smoothies.

You can also blend them with a little sugar&lemon to make a really nice sauce for angel food or pound cake.

Mmm... now I want strawberries...

Oh, any leftovers are definitely going in the freezer. Now if only I had a little more room up there...

Oh, I miss that season...
Rhubarb is totally in season at the moment, and strawberry-rhubarb compote is easy - just boil'em all together - and delicious with vanilla ice cream.

I also note that Trader Joe's decadent chocolate frosting, melted for 10 seconds in the microwave, makes a delicious sauce to dip strawberries into for a nice romantic evening.

Alas, I haven't seen much rhubarb around, but I'll keep looking. Good suggestion on the frosting - I tried to make chocolate covered strawberries a few weeks ago and it turned into a goopy (although still tasty) mess.

I find pure melted chocolate doesn't work so well, but this frosting is awesome. Maybe rhubarb's just out in the Midwest.

Here's one healthy suggestion, one unhealthy suggestion and one sophisticated suggestion:

- I slice strawberries and apples or pears and add them to salad alone with walnuts and dried cranberries. Cutting them lengthwise looks like a heart so this i called a "sweetheart salad"
- Strawberries and chocolate are always a good thing: I'd suggest a thick slice of fudgy David Glass Ultimate Chocolate-Espresso cake (Trader Joe's often has them)
- At the Fancy Food Show many years ago, they served fresh halved strawberries in balsamic vinegar and a dash of brown sugar. Surprisingly, these were awesome & I highly recommend them!

Strawberries and basalmic vinegar? I think I actually had these once, and I'd forgotten, but it was yummy.

And apparently Trader Joes really is the place to go for chocolate...
