I had a small apartment that I painted in jewel tones. The bedroom was deep turquoise, the living room a ruby red, and the bathroom peridot and jungle tones. I did a nice job, but didn't paint it back white when I moved out. I didn't expect my deposit back, but they found someone who loved the colors to rent after me and I was shocked to get the whole deposit back. This took me back to that place!
Goodness. I don't know what state you live in, but I've spent 17 years in residential property management, and a place like this would be shut down here. I can't believe you put up with this.
I once pointed out where my rabbit had chewed on the moulding, so my housemates wouldn't get dinged for it. The landlord said it fell under wear and tear...
Always nice to receive what's due for a job well done, makes the satisfaction of the work more rewarding. And good for you for using your understanding of the job to "be the better" party.
Ugh, that sounds awful. I moved out of one apartment where it appeared a pipe had broken, and mushrooms were growing out of this large rust-orange stain in the carpet. Because I was 1) depressed and 2) not sure of when it had started (I'd had stuff over that spot for some time), I didn't report it to the landlord, just moved and figured I could kiss my deposit goodbye.
Weirdly I got the whole thing back on a technicality - in my state, there's a time limit for landlords to contact you about the deposit; after a certain point of time I think you automatically forfeit the deposit, but if *they* haven't contacted you, they're at fault somehow (forgive the vagueness, this was years ago). So after some months in my new place I wrote a little "pursuant to this statute" with the time limit, I'm asking for my whole deposit back. Bam, like a week later, the whole thing came in. It was lovely. Especially because with that stupid mushroom spot, I probably didn't deserve it.
