Honestly, I've never lost anyone as close as my father and like you, I am irreligious and have no belief in a god. Gosh, our situations are so similar, but different. As a realist, I realize the inevitable, but I don't think that means I will be necessarily ready to cope emotionally with loss of that magnitude, especially after the experience of his decline.
