Inevitable

    We use that word absent of the necessity for faith, which is a little strange. Even if we don't believe in fate or a universal plan, we believe that certain things are inevitable. Thank you for posting this. Currently, my father is battling what we believe to be ALS. The symptoms came on very quickly and so went his health, balance, weight, and so forth. Sometimes, he does the same thing you described your father of doing with the "zoning" look, but I discount it in trying to empathize what he could possibly be thinking of or going through.

Honestly, I've never lost anyone as close as my father and like you, I am irreligious and have no belief in a god. Gosh, our situations are so similar, but different. As a realist, I realize the inevitable, but I don't think that means I will be necessarily ready to cope emotionally with loss of that magnitude, especially after the experience of his decline. More frightening than all of that though is my mother's mental state and my family's financial...

Again, thank you for sharing this. It helped me and I'm sure others to place their lives into perspective.
