I had a similar realization years ago about my step-dad. Many things he did when I was younger, such as being so militaristic in his punishments, made me stronger as an adult. They also damaged me a bit, in their own way.
Anyway, your thoughts about re-creating yourself reminds me of something: "Battle not with monsters lest ye become a monster; and if you gaze into the abyss the abyss gazes into you." Nietzsche
In other words, if you put yourself into a negative framework, you will become negative. And conversely, if you put yourself into a positive framework, you would then become more positive.
And in other words still, you create yourself as you see fit. You are always able to be molded and shaped however you see fit. All it takes is time and energy.
