The Test and the Lesson

Apr 12, 2009 08:51

The other day, while looking through some quotes online (to insert into the footer of the daily mail call email I send out), I came across a quote saying that, "Experience is a harsh teacher, because it gives the test first and the lesson last". I giggled to myself, having found this to be valid thus far through life, and proceeded to paste it into the footer.

Today I got yet another glimpse of serendipity, as I believe I was tested. Nothing ground-breaking or phenomenal, just one of those little things that lets you know the universe is looking out for you : )

Lately I've had an added morning task of going to pick up one of the locals for this department, and this morning I didn't have a chance to get breakfast like I usually do. Upon returning from the gate, I was at the smoking area and a guy was talking about the DFAC (cafeteria) in a newly developed area of the base, and how they had REAL food since it was an American transit area. Let me say also that, because of the seriously low-quality of the food at the DFACs we frequent, the idea of 'regular bacon' sounded like no less than a description of Shangri-La.

The man was trying to convince the another guy to give him a ride out there, since it's about an hour's walk roundtrip, but he declined because he was heading out to his jobsite.

My wonderful mailroom post boats many benefits, solitude, flexibilty and independance, and the main function of this post during the morning is to distribute mail to people that come in to pick it up. I don't particularly 'have to' be here if there's something else I need to do, but I like to man the station and give people the opportunity to have a great mail experience, including not having to come back 2 or 3 times to catch me in the office, putting candy out and my 'tip' jar (as described in my previous post).

Damn this super duper work ethic of mine.

Hungry, I begin to contemplate giving him a ride, weighing the pros and cons of leaving the station unmanned. I didn't mention to him that I had a vehicle and that our bellies could be full of Rip It energy drinks and real bacon and actual eggs within the hour, as I knew it wouldn't take much persuasion on his part to get me to go. I got up and waked back to my post, convinced that I did the right thing, and ate some Keebler fudgie cookies and slammed a Mountain Dew and accepted that as the way it had to be for today.

A couple people came in to get their mail, validating my efforts to remain at my station, and my supervisor actually came by to have me make a correction to the timesheet. So it WAS good that I was there (not that it would've mattered if I were gone, everyone here knows how it is, we LIVE here, we have laundry and eating and bathroom needs to attend to throughout the day); but THEN, after my concerns about the mailroom being unmanned were adequately validated, in comes the lady who was training me, who had just come back through Dubai from a medical leave with MCDONALDS and hooked it up with a Big n Tasty that was nothing short of heaven for my cookie-rattled hunger pangs! Haha

Good times. It's the little things, I guess

It was McDonalds however, so I will be off to the bathroom now! LOL

: )
