Naruto Ch. 486 - Translation Script
As of this week, I've decided to start tracking down kanji scripts for new Naruto chapters as soon as they're available. And since I have them, I might as well share them, right? Please let me know in the comments if you want to continue seeing these.
The kanji scripts were taken from mangahelpers. Fair warning: the first half of this script seems to have been removed from mangahelpers between the time I found it and the time I finished translating it. I haven't seen the scans. That section is therefore subject to reasonable doubt as to authenticity. However, the interesting (and dialogue-heavy) bits all come in the section that is still marked as "Verified".
I'll present a general summary of the action as described by the transcriptionist, and a full translation with kanji and romaji for dialogue. Since I haven't seen images yet, all my second-hand reports on action sequences are subject to doubt, and will be as bare as I can manage so as not to unduly influence interpretations. However, the kanji for the dialogue is listed as confirmed and I will interpret as I see fit.
NARUTO, CHAPTER 486
[Rising up, Sasuke seems to remember something in the course of his anger RE: Itachi. If I read this correctly, something about being led toward Konoha by Naruto. I did not find this description particularly clear. However, Sasuke becomes greatly disturbed by this connection to Itachi. Naruto, meanwhile, enters Sage Mode.
TRANSLATOR'S NOTE -- the transcriber has used the term: "世捨て人のモード" -- "Yo-sute bito no MO-DO". I had expected Sennin, the term for an immortal sage or wise man that was applied to Jiraiya. Where Sennin indicates a hermit as a simple noun -- 仙 [sen] meaning hermit, and showing in the ideograph the man removed to a mountain, followed by 人 [nin], meaning simply 'person' -- "Yo-sute bito" literally translates to "A person who has cast away the world". Things like this are why I resolved to read the story primarily in Japanese from here on out.
Back to the action. Sasuke calls on Susanoo, to the surprise of Sakura and Kakashi. As the battle resumes, Sasuke uses Susanoo and Naruto uses his clones as well as his extra-large Rasengan.]
ナルト：丸オバマ！
NARUTO: --gan Obama!
[T/N -- I'm not providing a translation at this time, as 1) this is an attack name and 2) I have not been able to confirm that "Obama" is not a typo. I would have expected "O-dama", which Naruto has used before. I'll update if I learn more.]
[Sasuke, enclosed in Susanoo, is unharmed.]
サスケ：白痴！
SASUKE: Hakuchi!
Idiot!
[Sasuke appears behind Naruto, looking rather crazy.]
サスケ："初めから私の錯覚に陥って..."
SASUKE: "hajime kara watashi no sakkaku ni ochitte..."
"You've been caught in my illusion from the beginning..."
[T/N -- He appears to be quoting Itachi.]
[Several kanji are used here, in what appears to be a break between sections of transcription, that do not appear in my dictionary. After this point, the dialogue kanji correspond to what is marked as "Verified" on mangahelpers.]

[T/N -- Naruto's construction, where "If we don't..." implies "We must talk", follows a construction that identifies a fist as a tool. It's possible that Naruto is saying that they need to have a discussion using their fists. The "otagai" repeated throughout this conversation emphasizes the idea that, whatever they're doing, it will be a mutual and equivalent action.]
ナルト お前は友達だからな
NARUTO: omae ha tomodachi dakara na
You're my friend, see?
だからお前の憎しみを一緒に背負って一緒に死んでやる
dakara omae no nikushimi wo issho ni seotte, issho ni shindeyaru
That's why I'll shoulder your hatred along with you, and I'll die along with you.

SASUKE: temee ni itami wo wakatte morau tsumori mo nai shi~
I have no intention of allowing you to understand my pain.
[T/N -- This one line was the reason I decided to post an annotated translation script. "Morau" as a verb modifier here is a choice that rather surprised me. By itself, it can mean to accept something (as with a gift) or to take something. Following an action, as it follows "waka[ru]" here, the sense is that the speaker has received or intends to receive that action from someone -- they will have this done. In the case of this sentence, that action would be "understanding" from Naruto. This isn't a denial of Naruto's ability to understand. He refuses to accept the understanding that Naruto has offered.]
俺は死なない
ore ha shinanai
And I am not dying...
[T/N -- I've chosen a neutral statement of fact over "cannot die" or "will not die", as whenever I hear contrasting forms of negative verbs, this is the form that is used to imply that some force beyond the agent's will is preventing him from taking that action. That is to say, if I recall correctly, this would be the form to imply that Sasuke cannot die due to forces beyond his control rather than the form to say that he, of himself, refuses to die. However, I don't want the translation to imply that he thinks he's immortal as "cannot die" would do in English. I don't see that implication here.]
お前が一人で死ね
omae ga hitori de shine
You die by yourself.
カカシ お前はいずれ火影～になるんだろ
KAKASHI: omae ha izure hokage ni narun daro
You're going to be Hokage someday, aren't you?
サスケは俺がやる!

[T/N -- The difference between the word "tomodachi" and "nakama" is a pivotal point here. Both are often translated as "friend". But while "tomodachi" actually refers to friendship in the personal sense (Naruto uses this in an earlier line to explain why he would die along with Sasuke in the course of helping him bear his hatred), "nakama" is more like saying "one of us".]
サスケは俺が闘る!!!
Sasuke ha ore ga tataka[u]!!!
I will fight Sasuke!!!
[T/N -- The romanization of the transcription above would be "tatakaru", which isn't a correct formation of the verb in question. "Tatakau", as written above, would be correct, as might be "tatakaeru". This is probably just a typo.]
