I've had this tab open with this subject line since the
longlist came out, and just couldn't organize myself to write anything down. But! Some thoughts!
We were so rich in novellas this year, like, I nominated Salt&Fortune and Ring Shout onto the ballot, Pure Moon came *so close* to making the ballot (but got EPH'd by Finna, looks like), I would have liked to have enough nomination slots for Seven of Infinities (I was going to, and then I tossed it for Four Profound Weaves). Interesting to me that Drowned Country didn't get more nominations (45) given that Tesh got 90 for the Astounding, but I guess I just said we were rich in novellas. I liked Flyaway and Burning Roses, too, and I look forward to reading When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain and maybe The Stone Weta at some point. Such abundance! Tor.com truly winning the new age of the novella!
Pleased to see Stick of Clay, Important Failure, and Exile's End on the longlist here. Not bad to get down to Novelette before I had a nominee not make the longlist (a story by Rich Larson), although that is partly due to my only nominating one novel this year, doh.
On the other hand I spent three of my short-story nominations on things that didn't even make the longlist and did not nominate "My Country Is a Ghost" and would have had to be *really sad* if it had missed the ballot by one vote. As it is I think there are like six of us who should be sad.
I feel like this is a fairly respectable showing for Queen's Thief in Series given Hugo voter demographics.
Graphic is definitely the category where I feel most out of step with most Hugo voters - I suppose the McGuire people cannot help but be excited over McGuire doing Spider-people, but, like, O Human Star is so much more exciting than anything that made the ballot, and Magic Fish came *so tantalizingly close*, and I did like WicDiv but I feel like we could maybe be slightly less into Gillen any day now, grump grump.
Aaand Wolfwalkers got EPH'd for Dramatic Long in favor of *Tenet*, grrr. (I should watch Bill & Ted at some point...)
Maybe Dramatic Short is the category where I'm most out of step with Hugo voters, since other than She-Ra I nominated stuff like Steven Universe and Owl House and Kipo. Although we did watch Watchmen this year, and Lovecraft Country, and I probably would have nominated episodes from those in their relevant years if I had watched them earlier, so maybe part of it is just that it takes me a long time to get around to TV...
Huh, no Victo Ngai even in the longlist for Pro Artist, that surprises me a little.
I am so confused about what counts as a Semiprozine, I thought Clarkesworld and Lightspeed were pro.
Neither of my fan artist nominations made the longlist with the people who had four nominations. Are they even qualified fan artists? Who can tell? Clearly not me! (And given that this category had 50 fewer nominators, at 221, than the next smallest category, fanzine, neither can a bunch of other people! I bet a bunch of the 331 pro artist nominators have fan art opinions!)
Astounding: of people on the long list who I know anything about, I think Ifueko and Deonn and Thomas all should be eligible again? And of course Larkwood is, and I think Lauren Ring wrote some short stuff I liked and is eligible again... I really dislike that the Astounding Award
page only lists people who aren't on the
RSR list, which is ugly and impossible to just visually skim for author names that look familiar. (I don't know how hard it would be to write something to do the skimming work and pull out, like, a plaintext list of author names from this page, but please share it with me if anyone does that!)
