I woke up this morning around 3:30 and couldn't go back to sleep. I just realized it must have been my subconscious notifying me that today is my LJ's 5th birthday! Let's reflect on where I was back then:

On April 5, 2002, I:
- was still single, albeit engaged
- was living in Atlanta with geebs and JS, a veritable bachelor geek Ground Zero ( Read more... )

I've never eaten a burrito.

How exotic.

The handful of Mexican restaurants in Edinburgh do them, but they're expensive restaurant-y food, which is kind of wrong. Like paying a five or six quid for a bacon roll.

You've probably never eaten a bacon roll!

I can't even picture what a bacon roll could conceptually be. My best guess is that its some kind of biscuit (already I know I'm wrong since UK biscuits are different than American ones - I don't mean something sweet, I mean something flour-y, soft, and filling, akin to scones) lined with bacon on the inside ( ... )

You're way off on what a bacon roll is! It's quite dull really - a white bread roll with a bit of butter and a rasher (of bacon) inside. I'm not a big fan, but they're ubiqitous here in Edinburgh and all the other (post-)industrial cities of Britain. Very cheap (between 70p and £1), and could never, ever be restaurant food except in some sort of post modern ironical way ( ... )

Apparently, in her previous meat-eating persona S was a big sausage roll fan in her university days - I brought this topic up to her and it gave her lots of nostalgia...

The concept of meat in pies in America is pretty much unthought of. A pie conjures up dessert, nothing more nothing less. People even get exasperated with thinking of pizzas as "pies" from time to time. Although come to think of it, I remember seeing pie vendors in Victoria Station (well, they were called "pasties" I believe - is that the same as a pie?) that had various hearty fillings...

Let's just assign everyone to bring food to Amsterdam!
