Hello from the "Business Center" of the Holiday Inn Express in Duncanville, TX. I'm on a business trip doing stuff in Cedar Hill (a little to the south of here) this week, part of next week, and part of the week 2 weeks after next week. Duncanville is just south of the Dallas metro area - I can get to downtown in about 20 minutes, and I can get to ( Read more... )

Nick really likes the DFW area and thinks he would like to live there. I don't share his assessment but I haven't spent any time there other than at an airport and driving through during evening rush hour (and buying something at a pet store for the thirsty-but-picky pug).

glad you're having a fun trip! :)

I can understand the reluctance - those 2 experiences you've had are part of its major failures - and that's how I thought I would feel about the place too. But maybe its just because their arts culture is so much superior to Atlanta's that it feels invigorating - and trafficwise, I think its impossible for a lifelong Atlantan to complain about somewhere else's traffic...

Regular tea? With sushi? It floods the mind with comebacks, the cream of which would not surface in time to actual say of course, as I'm sure you experienced.

When in Texas, it is BBQ and TexMex.

Wonderful post. Wonderful. If you get a lot of warning on a future Texas visit, let me know (I mean months and months). Rodney's sister and her kids live in the suburbs of Dallas and we'd always be up for a visit IF we allow enough time for a trip to Austin (where his best galpal and her husband lives). We could get a night on the town in the Big D drinking regular tea and maybe even hearing Jandek.

Isn't that Kennedy death scene amazing - this little spot where time stands still in the middle of the modern world.

And to think I was about to brush up on my Japanese skills there, until I realized that nobody would be able to understand what I would say even if they could hear me over the crunk soundtrack...

I agree with the Tex-Mex assessment, but alas it does some ugly stuff to you after 3 meals in a row. I haven't even eaten barbecue there yet - maybe that'll cap off my last trip there.

Speaking of which...if Tuesday August 14 isn't too soon for you, said Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth will be screening The Seventh Seal as part of that whole "50 Years Of Janus" thing that has been going around. There's gotta be some cheap flights to DFW, right? C'mon, first round of tea will be on me!
