in the spirit of the season, its time to destroy another glossy-eyed portrait of humanity--you know the walk that they make in before sunset (aka the best movie of 2004) throughout paris, starting at the bookstore and moving on to the cafe, then to the garden/park area and finally on the boat ride on the seine? all done in real time, no less? well ( Read more... )

1) I concur on Before Sunset being superb. It is a little kooky that they didn't create a realistic walk for them, but the bookstore and the cafe were both pretty ideal settings, and I'm extraordinarily jealous of you kids for getting to be there. Of course, I'm sure there are millions of ideal settings in beautiful Paris.

2) I *do* hope that you watched the deleted scenes on Love, Actually, or at least have not returned it yet, because a few of them are really pristinely indicative of the real point of the movie. And I am NOT talking about the little boy doing gymnastics in the airport. Skipping that one is advisable.

Before Sunset?! Like the sequel to Before Sunrise with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy? For some reason, I didn't think it was your kind of movie.

hey, i like richard linklater! yeah we're talking about the same movie--i liked "before sunrise" okay (although i could have hated it during my angry-young-man days; after all, i originally hated the ending of "rushmore" because i thought it was too sympathetic!) and the trailer for "before sunset", without having any other knowledge of the movie, would make it look completely avoidable to me--but knowing that its a sequel and not just another romance story, and that you actually do know these characters already, made it all the more interesting--plus the real-time aspect of it and how believable the two actors are--yeah, i'm just a big softy now! yeah, i can hear that *whipcrack* coming...

*whipcrack!* I'm just surprised you saw both. What happened to the guy that watched movies where Dracula was a metaphor for the corruption of rich society and how the poor (who think they're so great) will rise up and overthrow the rich and bring about a socialist utopia! (I'm sorry, that one guy still gets my goat. Who does he think he is?!) Or movies where crazy old ladies watch Annie while their dog licked their feet? Or where some guy has breakfast with a wrestling legend?

well, if it makes you feel better, one of the last movies i commented on in this journal had its climax when a woman drugged a guy so that he was conscious but unable to move, put acupuncture-type needles all over his body, and then proceeded to literally saw off his feet while saying something in japanese that sounded very much like a high-pitched "here kitty kitty kitty"--does that restore my credibility? huh?

...

i guess not...

*whipcrack!*

that simpsons one has been on a lot of times. oddly enough, its debut was at the same times as a new simpsons ep. anyway, did you know that yeardly smith had an eating disorder? she was talking about it on ellen or something once, and has a memoir coming out. poor yeardly.

Have a great time in paris!
