i used to write on this thing a lot more than i do now, and really there's no reason why i shouldn't be more present--as it is, i just looked at my page and saw that almost all of my most recent entries involve trip reports, which is pretty sad considering that the paris/dublin trip was almost 5 months ago and the spanish thing was several months ( Read more... )

The Blithe Sons show up about halfway through with sounds that will make a dead man cry.

(she screamed during winged migration, if that gives you a frame of reference)

So I assume that "Savage Bloodthirsty Predators of the World" will not be on your list of romantic nighttime viewings, eh?

I loved "Winged Migration" SO much, and I can't remember anything bad happening. The scenes with the birds wading through the industrial plant muck was pretty disgusting though. I thought it was a nice mix of positive and negative. Screaming, huh. I know, I know, she's sensitive, and this is one of the reasons you love her so ( ... )

i don't think this would be a spoiler (how can there really be too many spoilers when the movie plot is: birds fly around), but the movie goes about an hour through with all the flying and whatnot and then all of a sudden a gunshot fires and we see the bird fall--that was really intense for her...she hated the muck scene too but the combination of animal death and guns (two of her biggest bothers) really did it ( ... )

Oh right, the hunters and the ducks. And S. is a vegetarian, so I can see that. Since I eat meat, I rationalize that sort of thing, thinking that I would eat the duck, and that hunter is going to eat that duck, with his family. But I hate the killing too.

I'm sorry S. was so sick in her first trimester, yuck. But hopefully all will be well for this big trip. It sounds like it's going to be really great. As usual, I'm envious. :)

And I'm sure her grandmother will enjoy your smile and your "Nice to meet you" and your "thank you".

(I've heard nothing back from TCM, but thanks for the crossed fingers.)

yeah, hunting is a big X around our place--and my dad's side of the family is a hunting family, but thankfully those worlds have never collided...

well, i think just about every woman gets sick in the first trimester, but she never got nauseous to the point of vomiting which is better than a lot of people i'm sure--she just couldn't take some of our favorite foods and ingredients, and it was a pretty lengthy process to find out exactly what did and didn't pass the test--the biggest shock for her (and hence me) was getting over the lack of any hot peppers or spices or garlic...she's weaned herself back onto most of that now, though (although we are still a jalapeno-less household)...

remember when i was going to invite you to the flamenco night? that was one of the days when the nausea really struck, and she was debating whether or not she'd be able to control herself...but since i couldn't get in touch with you & since she didn't want to let a $30 ticket go to waste, she prepped herself and we survived through it...

i'm glad the baby (and the baby's mama) are doing well! whats that AoAFM vol. 5? is that something you can order from folkways or some bootleg? I read that he had put together a vol. 4 but died (or something) before getting down to actually labelling everything. so they had this reel to reel tape with no indication of what was on it.

yeah, i actually thought about this last night and realized my flaw--i've just lived in the cd age so long that i think of the original anthology as a 6-album set, not a set of 3 double-albums, so when i said "volume 5" i actually meant "volume 3 disc 1"--i was going to comment on that today before people started questioning me about it, unaware that somebody as eagle-eyed as yourself would already be calling me on it...

are you going to find out whether it's a boy or a girl in advance?
if you haven't already found out, let me just say for us, it was better than christmas not knowing, and lyn usually hates surprises.

i think we'll find out, but we're not going to say anything about it--we know too many people who have been misinformed, and considering that it happened to my brother-in-law both times he became an oto-san, it doesn't bode well for this particular family...so we don't quite have the utmost assurance from the medical industry...

although it would be considerably easier on the naming if we had an idea of which way to steer--when they came up with my moniker at ye olde english surname factory, i'm pretty sure they didn't bother to perform the "east asian naming compatibility" test--therefore we have to laboriously think things out or else we'll end up with something like akira johnson or sachiko wilson...
