oh no, its the day before the final day of the year & i haven't made a year-ending list yet? what kind of loser record-collecting type am i

I'm at work, and it is an intense day at work too, so I can't give this a proper response yet, but I just had to note how impressed I am that you have a list of every recording you bought over the year. I'm going to start doing that on Sunday, in hopes that it will slow down my buying and make me appreciate what I have more and remember what I've bought (especially those dang CD-r's in their slim little paper sleeves that get lost among the big boys).
And I have to get to my list tonight! That should take about ten hours (and sneak preview, Fursaxa will be on mine too). More later, now I have to work. I'll reread your post about 10 times during the day and add more later. I'm glad you went first.
i started listing everything for several reasons: 1) it gave me a satisfied feeling to see this big list and say "wow, i actually have all of these", 2) i could save myself the worry of making a best-of list by just putting that list on instead which requires no thought, and 3) like any record collector, my first impulse on visiting someone's place (assuming their collection is in the room) is to wander over and look at what they have - so i figure i may as well let it all hang out here, even if i lose my hipster cred by announcing i bought that franz ferdinand album (which would've been merely uncool in 2004, but utterly preposterous in 2005 - but hey, i've got my $4.99 of enjoyment out of it!)...
i can't wait to see your list! it was slightly painful to leave out the animal collective/vashti bunyan EP, and the josephine foster album, and i came this close to making my top 10 a top 17 of the year, but i realized that'd be swiping a page from your playbook so i refrained...
actually if you would've caught me at work in the summertime when nobody else was around, it would usually be "piggy in the middle" i'd be singing...but "cheese and onions" is a good one too!
Speaking of CDs over $10, I was at Barnes and Noble yesterday, and wanted some new music, but all their CDs are around $15 to $17 - I was shocked! I always buy online, and never for over $10. Guess I should stick to it.
As usual, I've heard of none of this music, but I'm glad you found so much to like, and I hope you got "Pho'ed up" proper! :)
buying albums the old-fashioned way is getting more and more ridiculous in this day and age, i agree - there's no real reason to do it, unless you're doing it at an independent store and want to help their business, or you crave instant satisfaction...
i'd honestly be curious to hear your thoughts on the sufjan stevens album - i know we've established our musical differences but i think its a catchy, extremely well-written album - he's on a quest to make 50 albums about the 50 states, and this is the 2nd one - i almost feel dirty knowing that gwyneth paltrow loves this album too, but what can i do...
alas, i went without the pho, but i got a torta so heavy that i ate nothing else for the night (though i found it in me to down a 500ml bottle of ale) - a fitting way to close out my workyear, in a food coma oblivious to everything else going on...
I was craving instant satisfaction, yes - it would have been fun to buy some music and take it home and hear it! That's the pleasure of music downloading, the instant gratification, but on my machine it takes too damned long. I think as long as CDs are available, online or elsewhere, I will continue to buy them.
And hey, I like Gwyneth Paltrow! I mean, I don't know her or anything, but I've liked every movie I've seen her in, and I think she is very beautiful to look at.
its not so much gwyneth paltrow (i'm really oblivious to her, i've only seen "seven" or "se7en" or whatever the hell its called), but just the dirty feeling that one gets when some hollywood type starts listening to someone from the quote-unquote underground that one also appreciates...
oh, i instantly gratify myself all the time (create your own punchline here) - although i still think of instant gratification as going to a store and buying something - downloading is obviously still something i'll never quite come to grips with...
Now that I am not a work, and now that I spent what felt like 24 hours finishing my list (about half of which was spent doing time consuming links and learning how to make an umlaut), I can give a slightly longer response.
*CDrs - I bought so many of them this year. I like the "obscure" factor, I'll confess, but I also feel like a lot of them are mainly just people who tap on a can and pluck three strings on broken guitar. The problem is I actually like the can and three string sound! But the flip side of that is that I don't need to listen to it over and over again, and I usually end up playing it once and then filing it away. I'm going to be much more selective about CDr's this year. I'm going to stop fretting about "reviews" that claim "limited to 50 copies", and I'm going to get back into giving all of my purchases several listens before I buy new ones

6) please sidestep the hipster hype on sublime frequencies, because its truly unlike any other world music label ever conceived (and i am a big NPR/smithsonian/rounder type person too) - unlike all of those fine names (and also unlike the other greats, nonesuch/ocora/etc), the SF albums document the styles of music that are mostly ignored by those fine names - or at least, if nonesuch has ever done a disc of metal bands from java i'm not aware of it - the biggest complaint about SF is the legality of it, as i've got into several discussions with the wife about potential exploitation of the musicians on here, who surely have no idea that their music is being listened to by the record-store elite in america - everybody i've played the albums to (and i've got the full set of CDs - i've only got one of the DVDs since i hardly ever watch music DVDs) agrees that the music is fabulous, but some have problems concerning the ethics - and it prompts long debates that never reach conclusion - we usually just give up and listen to the music
