Well, several of my friends have done their inevitable best-of lists, so I guess its time for me to put mine on here. As always, my disclaimer...This is my listing of the 10 best albums this year, in alphabetical order. It may be a new album, or it may be an old one, or it may be a rerelease, but whatever the case its got a little 2006 on its ( Read more... )

Never heard of 'em. You've got weird tastes.

:-P

Actually, I only have four more minutes at work which is why I thought I'd be a smartass rather than leave a thoughtful response which would take more than four minutes. But I did read this and I will comment more (I hope) and as always I'm in awe. AND, mine is coming...oh YEAH!

Oh yeah, I'm looking forward to that list. You know how us livejournal people are all so conversational about end-of-year lists...

I was afraid I'd get defriended after not having Ms. Joanna on my list but she's one of the aforementioned that was right on the cusp. Had the album come out a month or so before it probably would've made it on there somehow...same goes for the sunn0))) disc - although truth be told, neither show up on the discs i'm burning...

in any case i'll be slowly waiting to see what you have to say...

Hooray, I'm not the only one who heard Reiko Kudo's records. I solved the problem of having to pick one by inculding them both as one "pick" for my top 10. Man, I love those albums.

yeah, I was glad to see those albums on your list. Considering you could put both of the albums on a single disc (as I've done to indoctrinate others), and how they're both pretty similar, I'm not sure why they were made 2 separate discs to start off with. Maybe the Kudos are latent Guns N Roses fans?

great description of the Charalambides record. did they come through your area on the last tour? their show here was great - did a couple of songs from that rec and some old stuff. I talked to Tom and Christina a bit and it blows me away that they can still be such great creative partners and tour together etc after going through a divorce...

What is Tenniscoats? The name sounds familiar, but instead of googling them, I'd rather hear your take on them...

I missed them in Atlanta last month, but I did at least see them at Terrastock and it sounds like the set was roughly the same. Long may they run...

Tenniscoats are a Japanese band headed by the couple who also run the Majikick label. They're part of that greater Maher Shalal Hash Baz scene and for that matter they are also the Puka Puka Brians (with a few more people thrown in). They started out a little like Maher although a little less helter-skelter, but by the time of their most recent studio album they come across almost like an avant-pop band recording for ECM. You may know them also through the Tim Barnes connection - he drummed a bit on that latter album (entitled We Are Everyone, released August 2004) and also accompanied them on tour.

One of my Japanese friends (the only one who listens to our music) played me an album of theirs years ago, but I never picked anything up from them until the last time I was in Japan. She escorted me around and, when prompted for a recommended disc, said "all of them." Good advice!

I look forward to commenting on this list in the pages of a certain august publication, in two months' time. In the here and now, maybe it is time for me to check out The Life Pursuit again.

Or, considering that you already know the top 10 list, you can already make comments on it in your upcoming mailing - furthermore, if your zine title precedes mine alphabetically, you would actually be commenting on my picks BEFORE MY PICKS HAVE EVEN BEEN MADE KNOWN. Wouldn't that warp some people's comprehension of time?
